Over the course of the weekend, I managed to read several articles revolving around one particular case: a mother named Megan Nash who submitted photos of her 15 month old boy to be featured in an OshKosh B' Gosh campaign. However, he was rejected for one reason: he has Down syndrome.
To me, this is not only disrespectful but reveals how our culture even in 2016 still looks down upon people with disabilities because they may learn differently or look a certain way. That is unacceptable.
We as a culture that prides itself on diversity and non-discriminatory practices has failed once again to do that with the recent reaction by the company as they said, ' the company didn't specify special needs for the ad.'
No one should be looked down upon because they have a disability as they are healthy, intelligent, and amazing people just like everyone out there reading this.
The answer as to why people continue to quietly discriminate against people with disabilities may never be uncovered. However, we as young, optimistic, and open-minded individuals have the power to change how people view others.
We need to stand up to people and corporations' who discriminate against individuals with disabilities. Most importantly, we need to look at every single person not on how they look or act. Rather, look at them on how they are able to persevere and inspire others to be better people. Moreover, stand up for what is right because you have the power to change how our culture thinks.
