Have you ever found yourself watching Youtube videos in the middle of the night? Maybe you started watching a new music video but then fell down the rabbit-hole and the next thing you know you're watching Bob Ross paint or a Russian woman named Maria folding towels.
What is it about Bob Ross this woman folding towels that is so intriguing to the millions of viewers Maria and Bob have? Maria is one of the leading ASMR Youtubers, and Bob Ross is said to be an accidental creator of ASMR.
ASMR, or autonomous sensory meridian response, is described as "tingles" in one's head or spine though the feeling can vary from person to person. While ASMR has become increasingly popular recently, the feeling has been around for awhile and is now being studied to see if the feeling is real. I do not need the scientific proof though, as I have experienced ASMR first hand.
I accidentally stumbled upon ASMR a few years ago before I even knew what ASMR was, when a video by Heather Feather popped up on my Youtube feed and I couldn't stop watching. Earlier this year when I put a name to the feelings I experienced I decided to research some more. I figured out that there is an entire list of triggers that give people the "tingles" including tapping, personal attention, ear-blowing, scratching, and most commonly: whispering. I particularly enjoy tapping, though I'm still exploring other triggers.
As strange as ASMR sounds, it is an incredible and relaxing experience that only some people are able to experience. I encourage everyone to try out several ASMR videos to try and experience the "tingles" or maybe just find something relaxing.
