Think about disability in the media. Who are the disabled characters in movies? TV shows? What comes to mind? Rain Man? Grey's Anatomy? Breaking Bad? The disabled characters in these are all white.

Sure there are disabled people of color portrayed in media, yet they are fewer and far less known. The truth is in the media and in the world disabilities are portrayed as white.

The hashtag #DisabilityTooWhite was created by Vilissa Thompson, who tweeted it in response to an article about beauty and disability that only featured white people.

Now I am white, so I can't say that I understand the way that disabled people of color feel. But I acknowledge the fact that this is an issue. And this is an issue everyone can help solve including you and me. I am going to give you some simple steps to help.

1. Help Raise Awareness

You do not have to be anyone special to raise awareness. Re-tweet Vilissa Thompson's tweets. Male a post on Facebook concerning the issue. Share my article with your friends so they can read this and hear about the issue.

2. Don't try to hard.

Don't act like it's an issue that concerns you personally if it doesn't. Sometimes all you can do is acknowledge the issue and unless you are a movie producer you can't do much else about it. Be supportive of their efforts, but let the people behind the movement lead the movement.

We Heart It

Over the past decade, television has undergone a very crucial transition: the incorporation of female lead characters. Since it's a known fact that girls actually do run the world (Beyonce said so herself), it's time for the leading ladies of the small screen to get some credit. Without these characters, women would still be sitting in the background of our favorite shows. These women are not only trailblazers for female empowerment, but role models for women worldwide. With that, here are 15 of the smartest, sassiest ladies gracing our screens that remind us that women do, indeed, rule:
