Differing opinions enrich life as we know it

My Facebook news feed is inundated with political posts. This, on its own, is not a daunting statement or something that would usually warrant much attention. However, the divisiveness invited by the increasingly incendiary posts is something that can be viewed as a cause for concern.

This has transcended the world of social media and is apparent in everyday life. In the news, there have been reports of people getting attacked due to their political ideologies. There are people constantly deriding liberals or other groups of people looking down upon conservatives. It’s alarming because it’s almost as if one is not allowed to hold on to their own opinion without fear of attack.

I think Michael Jordan is the greatest basketball player of all time followed by Kobe Bryant. However, some of my friends and family think Bryant is the greatest while others believe LeBron James is.

Despite the differing opinions, we all come together at the end of the day and there is nothing more serious than a debate or an argument. This makes life, in my opinion, more exciting because it would become redundant if everyone agreed with one another.

After this previous election, however, things have been taking an increasingly negative turn. My family is, for the most part, liberal. Whereas, my Infantry brethren are typically on the conservative side of the spectrum. I see people unfriending others simply because of something they posted about their beliefs.

I was born in America, and that is one of the great things about this country; the fact that one can believe what they choose to believe. That is why it’s both alarming and disheartening to hear about people getting assaulted simply because they support a particular side.

People should be able to hold on to their beliefs without fear of being attacked. In the future, if I I have kids of my own one day, I’d like to believe that they will be able to have their own political beliefs without being afraid.

Differing opinions make the world a richer place and it allows one to see a side of the argument they may not have envisioned. It also helps one step out of their comfort zone and realize the fact that everything is based on perspective.

With that being said, one should not forsake friends or acquaintances due to conflicting ideologies. The great thing, that we cannot forget, is that we have the privilege of doing the research and formulating our own opinion.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
