Of course, we all know Mardi Gras to be the big celebration with lots of parades, wild people, and beads galore. But I have grown up attending these large parades since I was a young child, and I see this celebration as something much bigger.
Mardi Gras is so much more than the crazy people and “throw me somethin’, misters,” Mardi Gras is a way for people from all over the state and even country to come together and bond over a long time Louisiana tradition. I am thankful to have family in the New Orleans area, but over the years of attending parade after parade, not only have I made some truly wonderful and unforgettable memories with my family, but I have also met so many unique people from places near and far!
Oh, and did I mention the food?
Our cooking is already something south Louisiana is known for, and Mardi Gras only gives us a better reason to showcase some of our flavorful foods! I know my family gets to New Orleans early so we can grocery shop together for foods to cook and enjoy while having beads tossed all around. Gumbo, jambalaya, boudin, etouffee, and of course the all popular crawfish! You never realize how much people can bond over food until a king cake is pulled out and a crowd gathers.
It’s a family affair even though many pictures and stories make it seem different.
Contrary to popular belief Mardi Gras is a family-friendly celebration! It is actually an event many families travel to New Orleans for, my family makes the 4 ½ hour drive every year and it is definitely worth it!
It might be an old saying, but it is still very true that You Only Live Once!!!
We only get one chance to make our lives as adventurous and memorable as possible! So ask your family, invite a few friends, catch a ride, whatever you have to do to attend this celebration, I strongly encourage you to!! Laissez les bon temps roulez!
