When it comes to Valentine's Day, people usually fall into two categories. There are those who embrace every Valentine's Day cliche in the book, and those who wait for the chocolate sale the day after. Whether you feel deprived of love or are utterly obsessed with your significant other, there's an underlying struggle with love within us all, one that we rarely even think about, and that's self-love.
What's crazy to me is that humans are so extraordinarily capable of loving one another, but when it comes to loving oneself, the notion is practically nonexistent. We remember to love each other, the words roll so easily off our tongues, but in that process we forget to love ourselves. I think that terrifying part is that the person we're most uncomfortable with being around, is ourselves.
To me, self-love is being 100% comfortable with your body and mind. It's being selfish, it's embracing your flaws, it's knowing how to take care of yourself. Personally, it took me a long time to accept the skin I live in, because it's so easy to forget who you are when so many people are telling you who to be.
Focusing on yourself and not what others want for you or what they think of you, is the hardest task of all. But it's not impossible. So this Valentine's Day, no matter how you're spending it, take a moment to remember that self-love stands above all else.
Jorge Luis Borges once said, "Plant your own gardens and decorate your own soul, instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers." Let's all strive to do just that.
