Why I Love Deirks Bentley's "Different For Girls"

Yes, I'm a girl. Yes, I love it, but I really love this song by Deirks Bentley too.

I was on my way home from work the other day when I had heard a country song that had resonated with me. Of course, it's country so of course it's gonna pull on the heart strings. The song is called 'Different for Girls,' by Dierks Bentley. Sit back and read as I add commentary to every lyric that I can relate to. But I have to say before I start, I love this song, and it couldn't be more real.

“She don't throw any t-shirt on and walk to a bar"
I can't do this because I'm not old enough to.... But I'd probably do this.

“She don't text her friends and say, "I gotta get laid tonight."
One night stands aren't really my thing. Unless they just naturally happen. Which is highly unlikely, might I add.

“She don't say, "It's okay, I never loved him anyway."
That's true 100%! I fall pretty hard and fast in love.

“She don't scroll through her
phone just looking for a Band-Aid”

I just look for my mom’s number because I'd want her to bring me sushi or a good home cooked meal.

“different for girls when their hearts get broke
They can't tape it back together with a whiskey and coke

Well, I don't like whiskey and coke but I do like RBVs. But to each their own.

“They don't take someone home and act like it's nothing
Yeah I don't really do that, but if I did I probably wouldn't admit it like a guy would.

“They can't just switch it off every time they feel something”
Even when I feel like I can, I still remember the moment he met my family or the moment that he walked through my front door for the first time. It's like Niagara Falls after that.

“A guy gets drunk with his friends and he might hook up”
Yeah, because drunken sex and STDs sound great, or a possible pregnancy scare sounds swell.

“She don't sleep all day and leave the house a wreck
She don't have the luxury to let herself go

Depends on the type of girl. I mean, I'll sleep all day and not do a single thing. But again, to each their own. To be quite frank, I’m not as domesticated as I probably should be.

“It's different for girls
Well duh, who do you think we are...? A bunch of guys with penises? That's why we're girls with vaginas and feelings.

Yeah, it’s different for girls. And to be real, for us girls it’s harder than it may look to get over an ex or a fling or an almost boyfriend or whatever the relationship may be. But just from my experience, it is hard and even if things don’t plan out the way you’d think, listening to this song and making it fit for you is worth it. As long as it makes you smile. Rather than crying. So thanks to this dude for producing this song for us girls to laugh along with…. Or maybe even cry…. But that should be the last stop. Last resort.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
