The Holiday Season From A Split Family Perspective

It's not only about the extra presents.

Tis the season to be jolly.

With the holidays currently in full swing, it is definitely a time to reflect on the year and your life as a whole. Holidays are also a great time to get together with your family and relax after a long, stressful year.

I am part of a split family, meaning my mother and father aren't together, so my time around the holidays is a little different. Most of the time, it features me choosing which side of the family I want to spend my time with. This can be a little stressful, because, of course, I want to spend the holidays with my whole family. There just aren't enough hours in the day to make this happen, because my family is SO big.

Now, there's definitely nothing wrong with this. I do cherish the times I get with each side of the family, and even though I may not get to see them on the holiday itself, that doesn't take away from the fact that I can see them on other days throughout the season.

You have to remember that even though it may be difficult to spend time with the entire family, they always know how much you love them and they aren't offended that you don't visit their side of the family.

Also, with technological advances nowadays, they're only a phone call or Skype call away, so you can still spend your time with them even if you're miles away.

When I was younger, my favorite thing about the situation was getting the extra presents, but, as I've grown up, I've learned that this is not what the holidays are about. It's definitely a time to reflect on your year with the people you love most.

Happy Holidays from my family to yours.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.
