Scarface is a gangster movie that was originally made in 1932 and then was re-made in 1983. It is one of Al Pacino’s most iconic roles next to The Godfather. The film is about a Cuban immigrant in Miami who gained immense power through the drug cartel and the mob in the 1980s. It is now being re-made again by Universal Studios and on January 31, 2017, it was released that Diego Luna was going to star as Tony Montana in the new film.
The re-make is already a bit different than the original because it will be set in Los Angeles instead of Miami and will focus on a Mexican immigrant instead of a Cuban one but Diego Luna is most likely going to do an amazing job. Luna gained a lot of fame and popularity in the United States from the 2016 film Rogue One. Luna is a lead role in this film and was one of the strongest parts of the film. Although Rogue One is the film that gained Luna the most fame, he starred in other indie movies including Y Tu Mamá También.
He also already has a bit of authenticity for this film. While Pacino’s role was iconic in Scarface, it was very odd that an Italian American was playing a Cuban immigrant. Luna himself is Mexican, so it will be amazing for him to play a Mexican. Marty Bregman, who was a producer on the 1983 Scarface, is producing the movie. Universal Studios initially had a lot of backlash, especially from fans, when they announced that they were going to re-make the classic film but when it was announced that Luna would be starring, fans seemed very excited for the release.
The movie is still only in the scripting stage, so it most likely will not be released until 2018.
