Like many LSU students, I woke up this morning expecting to find an email saying that classes had been cancelled for the day, or at least for the first half of the day. But no.
According to TheAdvocate.com, Baton Rouge was drenched over the weekend with almost a foot of rain. The Advocate reports that this heavy downpour was “…setting new daily records and leading to flooding and road closures throughout the area”
Along with the flooding and road closures, more than 1,000 homes in and around Baton Rouge lost power last night.
Sunday night University spokesman, Ernie Ballard, said Heavy flooding on LSU’s campus had put roads and parking lots under water.
But why cancel school, right?
On my treacherous drive to school this morning I saw at least 10 cars that had been abandoned because they were submerged in water, several broken stoplights, random and abrupt road closures, as well as hazardous fallen tree branches.
I had a class cancelled due to the ceiling falling apart, causing a major leak and exposed electrical wires.
Several building and dorms were flooded, along with parking lots and walkways.
According to Nola.com, there was even a school bus that stalled due to the water in the flooded streets. Luckily, deputies responded to this emergency and rescued 20 children for the partially submerged bus.
I personally believe the safest and smartest option would have been to cancel all classes today.
And plus, we all got our hopes up that we wouldn't have class, so 99% of us didn't do our homework.
Here's a glimpse of our campus over the past 12 hours. Tell me you wouldn't want your classes cancelled too.
