Ah, yes. Winter break is finally among us. No more school, no more extracurricular commitments, and (most importantly) no more exams until January. What a life. Everything is going great until you dare look at your final grades. That math class you thought you aced? You got a C-. Now's it's messed up your GPA. You're worried that your parents will find out and seeing other people post about their 4.0s on Facebook doesn't help either. So what do you do?
Whether it's your first, second, or even last semester of college, it's going to be okay. It wouldn't be the end of the world if you didn't make the GPA you wanted.
My first college GPA was a hot mess. Naively, I decided to get super involved with my sorority, try and be like my roommate (who, apparently, didn't need to study), and be in a major I fell out of love with.
Now, I'm known to exaggerate the truth. That's what makes me such a good writer. But when I tell you that my GPA was a mess, I mean it.
It was below a 2.0.
I tried to shrug it off at first. "How bad could this be?" Oh, how wrong I was. My mother was furious at first, but calmed down and helped me figure out a game plan to get my GPA up to passing level. My father, on the other hand, was quiet at first, but wouldn't let me forget it.
To this day, he still never lets me forget it.
But alas, life went on. I got my game face on the next semester, decided not to hang out with my roommate, and made a 3.5 GPA that semester. Since then, I haven't made below a 2.8 GPA. But that doesn't mean I've had my fair share of disappointments.
I'm the kind of person who tends to dwell on things, kind of like my dad with my bad semester. I'm not great at giving myself a break when it comes to Cs unless the class was ridiculously difficult. When I don't make the grade I want, I hole myself up in my room and do something to get my mind off of it. Then, like the winter break after making below a 2.0 GPA, I have to make a game plan to get back on track.
This last year wasn't my best. Between the horrifying event of finding a body, some stressful classes, and eventually quitting my job, I'm not too proud of my GPAs. But here's the thing: life tends to be messy. Your college career isn't going to be like something out of Greek or Animal House. Life is going to throw a curveball at you, whether it's losing a family member, dealing with an illness, or just not managing your time well.
So remember, readers: life goes on. It's something I have to say to myself all the time. Next semester is a clean slate, a fresh start. And if you're feeling like you want to give up or that it's not worth it next semester, remember how great it will be when you do get that grade you want.
