It is true, I know how to ride a unicycle! What shocks everyone even more is that I learned to ride a unicycle in elementary school. Here is my story on how I learned to ride a unicycle:
In elementary school gym class, we would learn how to ride unicycles for about a week. Our school had a variety of unicycles and different sizes that allowed us to learn such an activity during class. When we finished up with the unicycle riding classes our teacher told us how there was and "open gym" for students before school once a week. During "open gym" students are welcomed to come to the gym and ride unicycles around with their friends. My friends and I always went to these open gyms and soon enough we became good at it.
On top of open gym, there was a unicycle club after school where students learn how to do tricks like figure 8's, zigzags, and even ride super tall unicycles. We then would train to perform such tricks and stunts because we would then participate in local parades.
Riding a unicycle in parades was an experience unlike any other. It was a time where I became friends with classmates, and they made my childhood even more memorable. I'll always remember our group "warming up" at our starting location with our school t-shirts on. I wore my red or black capri pants and my light up sneakers. When the float in front of us would start to move we would all get excited; it was showtime! Riding down the streets of our local communities made us happy. Seeing local residents cheering us on, and knowing that we could entertain them was highly rewarding. It is difficult to explain the experience because it is one of those where you just need to experience it yourself.
As an elementary school student, riding a unicycle was something new, and exhilarating. Most children at that age would play with toys, play sports (such as little league) or they would be taking music lessons. The fact that my friends and I had the opportunity to learn how to unicycle at such a young age is something that will forever be unique to us. I will forever be grateful for my unicycling experience in elementary school. And yes, I can still ride to my unicycle to this very day.
