As humans, we crave entertainment. One of those forms of entertainment we can't get enough of, is sports. Since the beginning of time, humans have enjoyed watching sports.
There was a time when they would flock to local arenas to watch the gladiators take part in a fight to the deat. Now people head to stadiums to watch their favorite teams throw or kick a ball down a field.
For those who are not athletic enough or capable of playing the sport, watch the sport. That's just how we are as humans. We live our dreams out through those who can are actually able to do what we can't. You can't catch a ball or hit a homerun? That's fine. Because there is always someone who can.
These athletes become our heroes. We look up to them. We don't see them as everyday people. We see them as these God-like creatures. So God forbid when they take off that superhero cap and actually come down to earth, showing their human side.
We have become so accustomed to seeing our favorite athletes in uniform, competing on the field or court. We forget that there is a time when these humans change into regular everyday clothes and head home to their families. We forget that athletes are humans with everyday problems like the rest of us.
Take Cardinals outfielder Dexter Flower. Recently he received heat from Cardinal fans for voicing his opinions on a political issue. That's right. He crossed that line. A celebrity talking about politics? That's a no no.
We all remember Meryl Streep who came under fire for her recent Golden Globes speech. She basically called out the president for being a racist, sexist pig. She tried to bring the world together and let everyone know that no matter where you come from or who you are, you are American. Ya, a real jerk. I know.
Now here we are again with Fowler. His situation is a bit different. He didn't give a huge speech, lecturing people. He just made a statement that explained a tough time in his life.
He was asked a question about President Trump's travel ban. Fowler did the unthinkable. He answered the question honestly while relating to his own life.
You see, Fowler's wife is from Iran. So anytime she leaves the country, she faces the possibility of being detained at an airport or barred from entering the country. So Fowler has obviously been affected by this. His answer to the question showed that.
“It’s huge. Especially anytime you’re not able to see family, it’s unfortunate,” Fowler said
This one comment ignited a social media fire storm.
Multiple posts and tweets were made, regarding the situation. Fowler was verbally attacked for his comments.
There were multiple comments telling him to just play ball, and that he's only a ball player, nothing more.
So it's come to this. We believe athletes are just here for our entertainment. They are the property of their owners and play toys for the fans. How ridiculous does that sound?
I tend to remember that they are still humans. They are made of flesh and blood just like the rest of us. They breathe, eat, and sleep like us all. They wake up, go to work, and do it all over again the next day, just like every other human.
It sounds simple. Yet this simple concept is so hard for people to understand. We see these athletes do inhuman things such as hit a ball 400 ft or do a 360 dunk. We are mesmerized by their talents so I guess we think that they can't be human.
But guess what. They are humans. And they can say and do whatever the hell they want. And there isn't a darn thing anyone can do about it. So get over it. They are better athletes than you but still are humans just like you. It sucks to suck. Trust me I know. But if I can live with it, so can everyone else..
