A Mi-Who?

Diary of a Millennial

Dear Diary,

So what the heck is a millennial anyway?

I keep hearing things like "these millennials don't want to work for nothing," and "millennials don't know anything but their snapping and chatting and instagramming." But even with all this annoying, most times offensive, and devise anti-millennial rhetoric, I still couldn't grasp the term in its entirety. So I did a couple minutes worth of research, (I'd be lying if I said it was extensive), and found a few definitions of what millennials are.

According to historians Strauss & Howe, Generation Y is what we regular people call the millennials. Us "millennials" are people born in the 80's and the 90's. That's it. Nowhere in this definition does it say we're spoiled, lazy, rotten, or a bunch of technologically crazed robots in human form. And to be quite frank, I would like to take this opportunity to debunk stereotypes that have been slapped on us by our predecessors.

1. Yes, I have a Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and SnapChat. However, the only one of these things you will find me on and on a consistent basis is SnapChat and well gosh darn it it's because I think of it as a video diary and I ENJOY IT.

2. No, I am not on my phone texting or on social media, hypnotically staring into a screen brightly glaring back at me while it takes my soul, during family time. I actually enjoy spending time with my FAMILY...

3. I love home cooked meals! Like using the stove and the oven. And believe it or not I rather not use the microwave. Go figure!

4.I respect my elders. * Insert over the top gasps from non existent audience*

So, there you have it. I could go on for pages but I'm not putting any more energy into stereotypical foolishness.

Sincerely,

A freakin' millennial who has had it up to here with the stereotypes.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
