Dear Diary,
It's hard to believe the new year is already a month old, and even harder to believe that there are still some people out there who are whole-heartedly keeping up with their resolutions. Like many, as a college sophomore my main resolution for 2016 was to have a lifestyle change (diet just sounds so harsh) and finally get back into shape. Obviously, this has proved much more difficult than I expected, and I have a serious new appreciation for people who have actually managed to keep off the freshman fifteen, sophomore 16, etc. -- especially if they managed to lose weight on top of that! That just seems downright impossible at this point.
For everyone who fits into the category of fit and healthy college students"(which I'm aware is not a very large demographic) I have several key questions for you.
How do you find time to work out every single day?
Between homework and my job and extra circulars I barely have time for meals, so how you manage to find an hour every day to go to the gym is beyond me. To me having a free hour means nap or Netflix time, the last thing I want to do is sweat in front of a bunch of strangers while worrying about how much homework I've been putting off all week.
How do you resist the urge to eat those chicken fingers, fries, etc.?
College dining hall food leaves quite a bit to be desired, and by a bit I mean something fried and bad for me. I often feel like I have to scavenge for food that is both nourishing and satisfying, and let me tell you that does not include anything with a lettuce base.
Like, do you not ever really crave any of those anymore?
Sometimes after a long day of class I like to relax with a large plate of chicken fingers and fries -- ya' know, helps with the stress.
What happens when you get hungry, but the dining halls are closed?
I, for one, know I have an arsenal of Easy Mac at my disposal, but for all of you who claim it's unhealthy and filled with sodium, I must ask what you snack on at midnight. .
Do you really stop eating after 9 p.m.?
For some reason, once 10 p.m. rolls around my stomach decides to sing the song of its people and I get a sudden urge of starvation. I've heard so many times that you're not supposed to eat after 9 but when your typical bedtime isn't until well after midnight how do you manage to suppress the urge to eat the first thing in front of you?
Seriously, where do you get all your cute workout clothes?
Half the time at my school I can't tell if girls are on their way to work out or go to brunch. I feel like the first step for me getting fit is buying some cute workout clothes, of which I currently have none and therefore have an excuse for not working out.
How do you feel so confident working out in front of guys?
The gym is approximately 60 percent frat boys at any given time -- all of whom seem to enjoy wearing T-shirts with the sleeves cut off and watching themselves lift in the mirror. Compare that to a lonely me struggling to hold a plank for more than 30 seconds and you've got yet another excuse for why I don't like going to the gym.
And, of course, my last burning question.
How long does it take before I look like I'm straight out of an Instagram fitness account?
I'm looking at you Kayla Itsines.
Sincerely,
Just another non-athletic college girl tryna get fit.
