Some of the best times in life are when you drop everything to go on a spontaneous adventure, and I did just that. I love hearing about other people’s and so I thought you would like some insight to mine.
This past week, I had the opportunity to visit one of the coolest places that has been on my “Florida Bucket List”: Devil’s Den. If you haven’t heard of it, Devil’s Den is a prehistoric natural spring found in Williston, Florida about two hours north of Tampa. Lucky for the owners of the property, they discovered an adventure right in their own backyard! Visitors either have the opportunity to snorkel or scuba dive while at the spring and we chose to snorkel. It most definitely was not the warmest day to do it with the high temperature only being around 60 degrees, but it was more than worth it. Year-round the water stays at an average of 72 degrees and I’m sure if you go on a hot day, it’s much nicer. We were also able to rent equipment, change and jumped right in.
Walking down into the underground spring is like walking into a whole different world. You are surrounded by limestone rocks but the view as the sun shines through the open hole at the top down on to the water, makes the shimmery blue water look like heaven. I can not even describe to you how in awe I was. As you dive in, you can see fish swimming and if you get lucky, the turtle as well. There are cracks and crevices deep down you can scuba dive to and explore or dive down to the shallower parts with your snorkel gear to see the view from below.
Overall, it was one of the most unique experiences I have ever had in my life and I know I will for sure be back soon. I highly suggest it to everyone if you have the chance to visit, do it. You will not regret it one bit. You can snorkel for hours and never get bored because the environment is just so fascinating. I found though that sometimes even the most simplest places can lead to the greatest adventures and this is one of them.
