Destined For What?

An Beginning Examination of Where I'm Headed

Destined For What?

Dear whatever is coming,

If you were to drop everything and just land a job that enables your interest levels and intellectual levels to be at their highest point, what would you be doing? Is this something we’re ever even able to consider due to requirements, bills, relationships, etc.? Maybe this isn’t exactly something we are able to conceive and reach in our minds because of how suppressed existing precedents have become in our opportunities and the actual realm of possibility that we find ourselves moving towards. If I had no restrictions, I’d be working in a unique location on a foreign film set or television series as a writer and contributor. It’s always fascinated me how vast the projects and jobs are within magnificent productions like that, but this is something I haven’t had the chance to move towards or consider possible due to where I am right now in my studies and in my general environment.

I think about the choices I have made thus far and how lost I have felt at times and wonder if there was one soul thing that I could have done differently that would have pushed me more towards clarity or not. It’s not that I regret the decisions that I have made socially or academically, they’ve all helped me in meeting the people I’ve met today, take some great classes, work with fantastic professors, and experience culture and things different from myself. And, I would do it again, but then is what we really want unobtainable from the beginning? All a graduate and professional school fair caters to is those who have their researched plans and an accomplishable goal written out, even if it’s just penciled in, but what then if that doesn’t exist for all participants.

My goal here is not to have amplification full of complaints and whiney grievances, but just to set an emphasis on our changing world which doesn’t have clear alignments or options set for everyone. My goal here is to state the rationalizing out loud and hope that it gets clearer; a goal that opens up the vantage point of an undecided and lost student to the future world so that it will conform to and work for us.

Signed, an apprehensive undergraduate senior.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
