Have you ever tried to describe a color? Many authors use color in their writing as symbols for emotions for their character, but have you ever tried think about it the other way around? What sights, emotions, and experience symbolize colors? It can be different for each person, but this is how I would describe colors without describing them as colors at all.

Red

Pouting lips. The flow of a gown that fits you just right. The clicking of keys as a document of great importance is being typed. A song sung with a powerful voice. Glossy heels that aren't too high. Elegantly groomed fingernails gliding across a smooth surface. Long eyelashes. A sly look from the side from your lover. Pricking your finger on the thorn of a rose. The sound of tires screeching. Deep and mind-numbing panic. The feeling when you know someone you trusted betrayed you. The heavy eyelids of someone looking at who they love. Dramatic, yet classy, eyeliner. The jerk of a hand once it's been burned. The inflections in a voice when someone is talking about their most heated passion.

Orange

Noisy construction work. A laugh so powerful that your sides start to hurt. Long August days. The time of day just before the sun begins to set when the shadows become dramatic and elongated. Sending a risky text message or email. The soft glow of a campfire on your friend's face. A confident, yet earnest, smile. Feeling young with your friends. Extroversion. Warm flannel shirts. All the traditions of Autumn. Childlike excitement. A grab of attention. The morning to a good day. Sweet scents. Drinking tea on a sunny day.

Yellow

The soft look of baby chicks. The most innocent form of happiness. Big, wondering eyes. The sun coming out after a particularly long night. A road trip with the best of friends. Summer trips to the beach. The way you love your best friend. The build up of excitement. Slowing down. New beginnings. Smiles so wide that your cheeks begin to cramp. When daffodils first begin to pop up in the spring. Blowing puffy dandelions and watching the seeds float to new homes. The sound of laughter. A warning. Sugary sweet pastries. The energy that surges through you when you have a really good idea.

Green

The way sun filters through leaves and hits the ground of a forest. The breathtaking view at the peak of a hike. Doing a good deed. Freshness. The cool scent of spearmint. Coming home. A mischievous sparkle in someone's eye. Stylish facial hair. The perfect cup of coffee. Disconnecting from technology and being with the people you love. The scent of jasmine flowers. Your favorite animal. A string of good luck. Ponytails. The comforting look and scent of wood. A concert in the summer. Finding a four leaf clover. Playing tag with the neighborhood kids until it's dark out. Going on a picnic.

Blue

The calm of the storm. The warmest hat you have that you wear out when it's snowing. Philosophical 3:00 a.m. conversations. Classy dinner parties. Pearls. Your favorite sundress. Perfect summer storms. Looking for constellations. How small you feel when you stand next to a skyscraper. Not wanting to get out of bed. Mondays in January. Floating in an ocean. Relief. Cold water on a warm day. Perfectly cooked pasta. Your favorite band. Being there for your friend. Curiosity for new things. Art museums. Working carefully and producing quality work. Rereading your favorite novel. The sound of violins. Jazz music.

Purple

The clicking of high heels. Defined dark eyebrows. Glasses. Ballet. Having good posture. Genuine laughter. The feeling of a first date. Being enchanted by someone you've just met. Falling back in love. The utmost respect. Midnight walks. Mystery. The feeling of falling asleep. Your mother crying in the kitchen. Saying goodbye at an airport. Handling misfortune with grace. A long hug. Playing with someone's hair. Cheesy romantic movies you're watching for the second time. Seeing the sun come up after an all nighter. Lipstick on a coffee cup. An orchestra. Humming along to yourself to your favorite song.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
