A Letter To My Older Self
Kate McKenna

Dear Kathryn C McKenna,

You are wanted. Understand that you are needed. Look back at all you have overcome and realize how amazing you are. You have been blessed in countless ways. We have come so far, from being a lost little girl, abandoned by an unstable drug addicted and alcoholic mother to being found in Christ and being put in a family perfect for you! Kathryn, you are strong, perfect and worthy of all you have accomplished. Please don't let the bullies get to you like they have gotten to me.

Please don't self harm, no matter how much power and control you think it gives yourself over the bullies and abusers. It makes them know that they are getting to you. Suicide is not the answer, I figured that out after way too many plans and suicide farewell notes. Too many times, have I come close to death. Life is precious. Please don't give up on me. We can do so many things from here on out. Focus on what makes you the happiest person and is healthy for us. Give all the glory to God and put your trust in him. There WILL be rough patches in this endless journey, but I know you are strong and you will not back down.

People will make fun of you in high school, and they will be cruel to you when you have something they cant have, like talent in theatre. Please remember to stay true to yourself and not be someone you are not. Remember all of the nights you have cried yourself to sleep, there will still be nights like that but it will get better and you will live to see hw your life turns out in the long run.

You are worth your life. Live your life to the fullest. Don't give it up just when life gets tough. When the boys make fun of you for having hips, make sure to sway them when you walk away from their petty talking, like you own the building. Guys can be so stupid, remember that please. Stay strong and love yourself.

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
