DePaul Career Center Empowers Students To Create Their Own Brand

The Career Center at DePaul University is by far my favorite on campus resource. I love all the other on campus resources at my university, but my true heart belongs with the Career Center. As a junior at DePaul University, I have a history with this office and have been exposed to their services and events that have made me grown both as a student and on the professional level. I will be explaining some of the services that have given me the skills in student development.

To start off, my very first encounter with the career center occurred my freshmen year when I went to their resume and cover letter consultation services. In this service students and alumni can come into an office where a career peer guide who is trained on resume and cover letter consultation sits in with you one on one for a resume or cover letter workshop. As a freshman I knew nothing on how to create a cover letter and resume, and I thought I had developed an effective resume, but I was wrong. In this session the peer guide goes over how to make it more effective and how to utilize more action oriented verbs. An added plus to this resource is that students do not need an appointment. Students can just drop in and a peer guide will be with you shortly. This definitely boosted my confidence and once my resume and cover letter was checked, I immediately started getting more interviews for many on campus jobs I applied to.

Furthermore, another opportunity where I witnessed student development was when I attended a job shadowing program the career center hosted during my sophomore year at DePaul. In this job shadowing program I choose where I got to know and understand more about a company and internship opportunities available. I choose Guerrero Media, a media company and was able to see a company at work. I also received many connections on LinkedIn, and had a day full of learning what college will be like once I graduate. Another area where I received growth and professional development is when the career center asked me to make a blog for their career blogs. I wrote an article called 10 Ways To Survive & Ace Your Final Exams. This was a big milestone with using the career center as a resource because it allowed me to grow as a writer and made me realize how I have developed a relationship with the career center. As a journalism major, it is important to write articles and this chance gave me the opportunity to share my work with others.

All in all, the career center is my favorite on campus resource at DePaul University. I have grown into a much more well rounded person because of their services. These are just a few of the many services I listed. To learn more about the career center visit their website and drop into the career center when they are open.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

It's not all morning coffees and singing along to the radio.

The Daily Struggles of Being a College Commuter

I've been in college for four years now. I spent half my time as a commuter and half as a resident so I've experienced both sides of the housing spectrum. One thing I've learned comparing the two is that my struggles as a commuter far outweigh anything I went through while living on campus. Commuters have to deal with the problems school brings along with a slew of other issues; I've filled up my gas tank in the worst kind of weather conditions and napped in random places in public more times than I'm proud to say of. This is a list of some of the most challenging aspects of being a commuter.
