Democratic Debate: Free College Tuition?

This year's Democratic Debate was held on Tuesday, October 13 and was hosted by CNN anchor Anderson Cooper. The Democratic presidential candidates who participated in Tuesday night's debate were Lincoln Chafee, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Martin O’Malley, Bernie Sanders, and Jim Webb.

The biggest topics of the debate were climate change, income inequality, political corruption, and cheaper college education.

Bernie Sanders, the Senator from Vermont, and former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton are promising to make college tuition free. Yes, free public college tuition! According to CNN, in the U.S. the average student debt of 2014 was $29,000, which has been steadily increasing since the 2008 recession.

Sanders said since the great middle class is disappearing, we need to create millions of jobs. And we get an education to better our performance at jobs, which in the long run creates more jobs.

"Raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour; pay equity for women workers; and our disastrous trade policies, which have cost us millions of jobs." Sanders proposed. "Make every public college and university in this country tuition free," he continued.

That's kind of interesting when Sanders said he wants Wall Street to help kids in this country go to public college for free with a Wall Street speculation tax.

Do you have student debt? Clinton said, "the 40 million Americans who currently have student debt will be able to refinance their debt to a low interest rate. That will save thousands of dollars for people who are now struggling under this cumbersome, burdensome college debt."

As a student myself, I look forward to the changes that the future candidates will do. They seem to know popular topics like the environment, economy, jobs, and education, so how will they solve the problems? Start with education.

A Nevada student told Clinton,“the hardest thing about going to college should not be paying for it." So, Clinton and Sanders propose that going to college and getting an education should be more affordable for everyone.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
