Many people nowadays ask each other, which are you? A republican or a democrat? No one adds in the libertarian or the green party because who are even a part of those parties. But it seems that we are in a world that looks in absolutes and when someone breaks the “rule of two,” then we get upset. The reason why people become upset is because we deprive them of making judgements about us. If someone asks for your political stance and you say you’re a moderate or an independent, then you have robbed that person of stereotyping you or profiling you if you had said you were a democrat or republican or a liberal or a conservative. The thing is, nowadays, no matter what you say, people generalize about you. Whether you’re a white person or a black person, a cop or a lawyer, a Christian or a Muslim, a republican or a democrat, and so forth. That is why when someone asks me if I am a republican or a democrat, I’ll answer with, I am a Christian.
Christians like to look at the political world as if you are Christian, then you must be a republican. So if you are a Christian, you should say that you are a republican. This is a false myth that has been controlling the church for many years. Not one party is perfectly aligned to the Christian belief. Not one party is completely for God or not for God. There are many beliefs on all sides of the political spectrum and that means not one party best emulates the vocation of Christ. Are there some stances that are very attuned with God than others, yes there are: Pro-life, saving the environment, looking after those who cannot, equality, and more. This is a humble jumble of stances that are on different positions throughout everyone’s beliefs. The beliefs of parties change throughout time immensely so then what do you do?
The reason I say that I affiliate as a Christian is because then people will know that my political beliefs will align with my religion instead of my religion aligning with my political beliefs. Many Christians today look at their political beliefs and bend God’s word around their beliefs to support and fit them. The thing that makes this a completely flawed practice is because I have read books and articles and have heard sermons of people using God to support the Black Lives Matter movement and to not support the Black Lives Matter movement but to support the All Lives Matter movement. If we can bend God’s word to support two different polarized options, then it’s not God’s word because God works in absolutes. Instead of using God as support to your argument, use yourself in support of God’s argument. This is one of the main reasons that we have separation of church and state, politics do not mix well with religion. God doesn’t want us to share our positions on our political stances, he wants us to share his word and to bring more brothers and sisters to Christ and it’s harder to do that when Christians put up walls between republicans and democrats. I am not a republican nor a democrat, I am a Christian.
