As we all know, social media basically runs the world. It is how we stay connected, share pictures, get our news, and keep up with celebrities. As fun as all of those things are, sometimes enough is enough.
Between Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, and Twitter, I felt pretty overwhelmed. I would waste so much time just aimlessly scrolling through pointless timelines and newsfeeds.
Last May, one of my best friends was involved in a very serious car accident. Thankfully, she walked away with only a few marks and bruises. I know that it could have been way worse and it really put my life into perspective.
I abruptly deleted Twitter because I wanted to spend more time focusing on my real life and my real relationships. I stopped using Snapchat and tried to limit myself to just using Instagram because I love pictures so much and it actually is a great platform for them.
During this cleanse I realized how much time all of my friends, and myself, wasted on their phones. We would be at dinner and every single person would be looking down at their screens. I hated that I was so addicted to my phone and everything that was on it.
As time has gone by, I have slowly started to use all of my social media accounts again. Twitter is the one app that I have yet to download back onto my phone. I actually don't ever plan on it. I feel like I never gained anything from the app. My timeline was full of people obnoxiously sharing their political views, arguing over something stupid or dumb memes that I just simply don't need to see.
If you find yourself spending every second scrolling through your social media accounts, getting worked up over how many likes a picture or a status receives or keeping yourself up at night by going back and forth between all of your various social media apps, maybe it's time to have a heart-to-heart with yourself.
Look up from your phones, people.
