The dehumanization of celebrities has gotten out of control. It’s as if the moment a human being is thrown under the spotlight, they no longer have emotions and are viewed as just an object that we can twiddle with and abuse. It’s obscene that vulgar comments and actions are thrown their way just because of their occupation, and that they are seen as ‘common’. It’s as if what they do will create a balance that makes it OK to sexualize, harass, and attack them. Recently, it’s been getting worse in our society and it’s upsetting just how people will treat others that are ‘famous’.
As a female, I have found it disgusting how the sexualization and objectification of celebrities has gone too far and has reached beyond the standard morals and respect. Gigi Hadid had been harassed by a man who had grabbed and picked her up from behind. Hopefully her elbow to his face was enough to make him realize that he had just harassed another person and that just because she’s a model doesn’t give anyone an invite to touch her. It doesn’t make it OK to touch or grab another person just because they’re famous. That status alone isn’t a verification that they are open to being prodded and poked. People are losing their senses on what is morally correct because of the fact that they feel they can do whatever they want to a celebrity without repercussion. It pains me to think about all the harassment that females have to face on the daily, and I imagine that it’s even worse when you’re a celebrity.
Just because the fame made them rich doesn't mean that they should be treated like trash and then buy their happiness back. Kim Kardashian West shouldn't have to worry about showing off what she can afford because another person may rob and hold her at gunpoint. Instead, we should be holding the mindset that people shouldn't be stealing from celebrities and holding them hostage. Better yet, this mindset should already be used as it’s common sense not to go robbing people and terrifying them.
If we continue having this mindset, we are only increasing the gap between celebrities and normal people, in a sense. Views of them (the celebrities) and us (non-celebrities) will widen as we see humans as two different categories and begin to see each other more differently than we already do. By allowing others to think that they can do whatever they want to a famous person without any negative outcome, we are distancing ourselves from the essence of humanity by believing that others don’t “count” that their emotions, feelings, thoughts, and rights may not count because of their status.
It's heartbreaking to realize that humans aren't treating each other properly and that we have desensitized parts of our society that are in the limelight.
