In recent news, Kim Kardashian-West was spotted in Paris as she attended Fashion Week. She was seen posing with her sister, Kourtney Kardashian, with bodyguards nearby. While in her hotel room, Mrs. Kardashian-West was held at gunpoint and robbed of $9 million dollars worth of jewelry. Reports say she was alone when the robbery was going underway. It is said that she was gagged and tied in her bathroom as two men robbed her. When the media received word of this occurrence, the people of social media could not wait to release their thoughts of what happened to the Kardashian.
The people of social media were also very active with their thoughts of the incident with everything from death wishes to rape jokes. From those comments, it's like the world has forgotten that Kim isn't just a celebrity, she's a wife, daughter, aunt, mother, and not to forget: human. You'd think when something traumatic happens we, as people, would gather together and help one another, but instead we show little to no sympathy when it comes to celebrities. If you scroll through the comment section of a celebrities social media, you see that there are very positive messages, but also horrible ones as well. Celebrities behind their wealth and fame is a human being and some of the people of this world just don't see it. The dehumanization of celebrities is no different than the degrading of women throughout time. As humans, we are supposed to show respect and kindness to one another. Chrissy Teigen took to Twitter her thoughts on how she felt about the dehumanization among her community.
This isn't the first time a celebrity was dehumanized by the people of social media. Back in 2011, after the death of the late Amy Winehouse, there was a collection of sadness and love for the artist. However, there was also hate from those that saw her as "just another addict". It's one thing to find rare sightings of celebrities around town or ridiculous scandals, but to find pleasure in the harming or death of a celebrity is appalling.
It's as if, with celebrities, we forget that they have feelings; that they have the ability to feel like everyone else does. So why do we continue to deny celebrities of their humanity? This type of ignorance is what makes people think that misogyny, racism, and the degrading of mankind is acceptable. This is pushing our country back in time from where we want to see ourselves now, making us counterproductive.
