So, this is my first Odyssey post, and I am thinking, “Wow, how could I come in hot and really make a name for myself? What do the people really want to see?” And it dawned upon me: Will Ferrell’s best performances. This is not what the people want, but what the people NEED. So without any further ado, I now give you Mr. Ferrell at his finest.
10. Steve Butabi — " A Night at the Roxbury"
I am going to be honest, I am going to give this movie a hard alright. I mean, we did get “What Is Love” from Roxbury and that might be it. The reason I put Steve Butabi on this list is the potential we see from this movie. It is quite obvious, and from what we have seen from the past couple decades, Will Ferrell can be thrown into any role and manage to kick ass.
9. Jackie Moon — "Semi Pro"
You can’t go wrong with "Semi Pro." I love the douchebag, ignorant character from Jackie Moon. Although this was not Will Ferrell’s first stint at acting pompously (see #1), Moon is a force of nature. His marketing ploys to get the Tropics to fourth place is unparalleled, especially when he wrestles a bear.
8. Phil Weston — "Kicking and Screaming"
This is one of Will’s most underrated performances, but he encapsulates the entire “dad” vibe. To throw him in the mix with angry dad Robert Duvall... golden.
7. Mugatu — "Zoolander"
A movie for the ages. Will Ferrell as the flaming, sly antagonist is a turning point. Not only for his career but for the entire movie industry. Not to mention the fact that Mugatu coined the term we all reluctantly say: “so hot right now.”
6. Brennan Huff — "Step Brothers"
Now, some of you will think I am putting Brennan a little too high on this list, but let me explain myself. This role is so heavily reliant on Dale that this film might have fallen into white noise without that dynamic. With that being said, this movie is so insanely funny. The fights, the musical performance, and the Catalina Wine Mixer are all iconic Ferrell moments.
5. Buddy — "Elf"
Phenomenal, iconic, "Elf" is undoubtedly my favorite Christmas movie. It's just so funny, and I kind of aspire to be like Buddy sometimes. To wrap up the Christmas spirit into one person and to nail it perfectly is just so amazing.
4. Frank — "Old School"
What a movie! So dysfunctional on so many levels, you can’t help but love "Old School." In the College Movie Hall of Fame (oh, maybe a new article topic), Frank the Tank is a unanimous first-ballot entry. I don’t think I have ever been more fired up (no pun intended) after his motivational speech after the failed school spirit performance.
3. Chazz Reinhold — "Wedding Crashers"
This one is so under the radar and so out of left field, I bet you guys did not even know Will Ferrell was in "Wedding Crashers." But he is, and man, what a show. Chazz Reinhold, the best (and far as I know, only) funeral crasher of all time. Although he was in one scene, I would like to say it could be one of the funniest scenes ever.
2. Ricky Bobby — "Talladega Nights"
Another flick while teaming up with John C. Reilly, this movie truly opened our eyes to the struggles of racecar drivers. The physical and mental preparation Will Ferrell had to endure to transform himself into Ricky Bobby was on par with Oscar-winning performances. The highs and the lows... we not only watched an amazing movie but also Will Ferrell at his best.
1. Ron Burgundy — "Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy"
This is an obvious number one, and I really do not think it is close. (I want to clarify even though the second movie was a bust, Ron Burgundy was still as amazing as ever.) "Anchorman" was such a great movie and any 20-something might consider this their first “adult” movie. If you were to take away the supporting cast around Ron Burgundy, he would still shine just as much.
Honorable mentions:
Lord Business — "The Lego Movie"
Dr. Rick Marshall — "Land of the Lost"
Chazz Michael Michaels — "Blades of Glory"
