January 20 marked the tenth anniversary of High School Musical. Ten years ago, kids around the world were introduced into the lives of Troy, Gabriella, Sharpay, Ryan, Chad, and Taylor. The songs brought the story to life and soon were stuck in people's heads around the world. Even though it has been ten years, the lyrics and dance moves are still engrained in our brains.Though all the songs are classics, there are some that are better than others. As an HSM fan, I took it upon myself to create a definitive ranking of the songs from the first movie, ranking them from the best to "worst" (though it's not actually worst, just not as good as the others).
1. Breaking Free
This is my favorite song in the entire movie. After everything that the basketball team and the academic decathlon team went through just to make sure that Troy and Gabriella make it to their callback on time, it only made sense that this duet be the best one in the movie. The two belt out the song like their lives depend on it and put on an amazing performance.
2. We're All in this Together
This song was perfect for the finale of the movie. After winning the basketball game, the entire cast unites, putting aside their differences, and puts on an amazing performance. Admit it, as soon as that song came on, you jumped up and started dancing because obviously you have it memorized.
3. Stick to the Status Quo
The famous cafeteria scene where everyone starts making "dramatic" confessions about their other hobbies. It is the quintessential song that describes high school and the way cliques work, making it relatable to anyone who watches it.
4. Bop to the Top
The second Ryan and Sharpay song that is even more over the top than What I've Been Looking For. Complete with a salsa dance and a sparkly ladder, the duo's catchy song pushes them to number three.
5. Get'cha Head in the Game
A classic song that shows Troy not wanting his friends to find out about his love for singing, so, in order to hide his secret, he bursts out into song in the middle of practice. You're real discreet, Troy.
6. When There Was Me and You
This was the most heartbreaking song of the entire movie. When Gabriella was shown the video of Troy saying that singing wasn't important to him anymore and that, basically, ball is life, it is pretty obvious that her heart breaks into a million pieces. The only way she can express her heartbreak is through song.
7. What I've Been Looking For (Ryan and Sharpay version)
Even though it wants Kelsey's vision, Ryan and Sharpay's rehearsal pianist put together a great arrangement. Full of jazz squares and more sequins than you can imagine, this song gave viewers a first taste of Ryan and Sharpay's talent.
8. Start of Something New
The song that started it all. Personally, it's not my favorite song in the movie, but it still is the one that after Troy and Gabriella sang at the ski lodge on New Year's Eve, it became every girls dream to have the same experience.
9. What I've Been Looking For (reprise)
This is the way the duet is supposed to sound. When Troy and Gabriella sing it together, everything seems right. Even though they didn't technically audition, they still got a callback because even Ms. Darbus couldn't resist their talent.
Thank you High School Musical for gifting us with these classics and defining our childhoods.
