In Defense Of The Teacher’s Pet

Why I love being that student

When I was in high school, my dad gave me some of the most valuable advice that I’ve ever used in my academic life. It was something I never forgot, something I still put into practice to this day, and something I know many of my peers could benefit from.

“Talk to your teachers,” he told me. “They’re people, too.”

For some, this thought is a total revelation. What do you mean, those evil gremlins who guard the gradebook are actually humans? Who would have thought?! But the fact is, so many students don’t act like their professors are people. They don’t act like anything they do could matter to a teacher beyond giving a grade or deciding whether or not to pass or fail a student.

As a proud ‘teacher’s pet,’ I want you to know that you’re wrong. I wish you knew about the professor who pulled me aside to tell me one of my teammates is doing a great job in class, or the professor who called me into her office to check that one of my friends is okay, since she heard about the bad breakup. I wish you knew about the stories they could tell, the 11:00pm email they answer, the funny videos, the tweets, the special gluten-free cookies, and the Star Wars stickers. I wish you knew about their compassion and understanding.

Even if it was just about the grades, there is so much benefit to reaching out to a professor. I can’t tell you the importance of the extension I received on a semester-long project, or what it meant to have a professor pray over me when I was going through personal struggles, on top of the extra day to take the test. Or maybe the time I asked a professor to take a final early, so I could make my flight and he told me just to not worry about taking it at all. I can’t even begin to tell you the benefits I’ve seen, academically, from reaching out to my professors.

But those things pale in comparison to the most valuable things I’ve gained. Don’t get me wrong, that time I definitely-probably-shouldn’t-have-made-an-A but somehow still did? That was something. But that time I ran out of class crying because I was so stressed, and came back just to find the professor already sitting down with my advisor to figure out how to help me through everything? That was amazing. That was an incredible feeling, to know that these professional, accomplished adults believed in me and had my back.

So yeah, I’m a teacher’s pet. And I wouldn’t trade those relationships with my professors for the world. While other people look back on their college classes with a mixture of disgust and regret, I’ll probably still be emailing back and forth about my favorite books and the hilarious YouTube video that reminded me of their class.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
