Going away to college is a fun and exciting experience, but being away from home can be a little nerve wracking, too. It's your first time away from your from parents and maybe your first time away from significant other as well. Long distance relationships aren't always easy, but here's some tips on how to make it work.
1. Make Time to FaceTime
There's a good chance you're used to seeing your bae in person almost every day and transitioning away from that isn't going to be easy. The two of you should make a point to FaceTime once a day, even if it's just for a few minutes before you go to bed a night. Being able to talk face to face via video chat is the next best thing to actual seeing each other in person and will help keep the two of you close.
2. Text Less
Non-stop texting isn't the best way to stay in touch. Texting is impersonal and doing it all day long leads to meaningless conversation. It's okay to check in throughout the day, but save conversations about your day for phone calls. If you don't share every detail of the day while its happening you can enjoy your time more by not being glued to your phone. You can also have a nice conversation later in the day where you get to catch up and be able to hear each other's voices, which is more comforting than texting.
3. Talk it Out
I'm not here to tell you how to go about your long distance relationship. Some couples choose to tell each other everything and some choose to have a more open relationship where they leave out the details of what happens while they're away. No matter how you choose to handle the distance, there's going to be bumps along the road. Long distance isn't easy and you guys are bound to argue about something at some point. It is very important that you try to stay level headed and calm when you have a disagreement because you aren't going to be there to comfort one another after it's over. And most importantly, you should never argue over text message. You can't tell someone's tone over text and it's easy to misunderstand what they're saying, which can lead to making the fight worse than it already is.
4. Make Plans
With the hardship that comes along with being away from the one you love, its important to have something to look forward to. Make plans to visit each other. Counting down and making plans about what you're going to do when you're together is something exciting the two of you can share together.
