Every month or so, our Editor-in-Chief, now President of "Millennials of New Jersey," sends us stats of the Top 25 Odyssey Communities. Although Millennials of New Jersey appears on the "Articles" and "Live Creators" columns, we rarely appear on the "Pageviews" column.
I do not want to name any communities in particular, but I have glanced at the top articles and the articles dated from January 2018 of those communities on the "Pageviews" column and tried to deduce what made them common. Hopefully, I can see if it would result in Millennials of New Jersey developing a way to attract more page-views based on the research.
The most popular articles pay close attention to location, time, and who the writer and audience are. In these cases, the writers and the audience are millennials, so any place where millennials might frequent and any time millennials have lived are important factors.
Although not every Odyssey content creator is attending college, the topic of college-enrolled millennials is a popular topic, specifically how college can be relatable, how it can be navigated or any helpful tips. Relationships are especially relevant and appear in the articles of these communities, detailing dating and familial relationships. Another popular topic is television series, music, and movies. Specifically, ones from the 2000s. This would make sense since millennials would have grown up in the Aughts.
Not only are the topics relevant to the writers themselves, but also to the universities in which their articles are based. An example being the racist rant by a University of Alabama student that was written by a writer from the University of Alabama Odyssey Community.
There are also events that were relevant at the time being written, such as the sexual abuse trial of the Olympic doctor which was a huge topic in January 2018. It turns out people will immediately start searching on Odyssey to find any articles that detail any event happening at that moment.
A unique topic I found was feminism, but more specifically articles closely examining that concept. Either these writers just do not like, as they saw it, what it has become, or were outright denouncing it. I have also found articles written in response to popular articles that were dated in January 2018 by these popular communities. Opposing viewpoints does create an environment of diverse opinions.
Besides the articles, I also find from the "Top 25 Odyssey Communities" chart that the majority of these communities have a lot of members, with the highest being 120, as of February 2018. Out of those 25 communities, the average number of members in each was approximately 62.
I also see no coincidence in that the Odyssey communities in the "Pageviews" column also appear in the "Articles" and "Live Creators" columns. There are even some of the communities that are in these two columns that are ahead of Millennials of New Jersey. I would think that both of these rankings help those communities increase the chances of viewership by producing many articles and have a cohesive communication between the writers.
Based on what I have found is that since Odyssey is an online publisher/social platform hybrid targeted towards millennials, it would make sense that the issues that impact this demographic would attract more readers. I would hope that my community will be able to make these notices as well and perhaps reflect off them in their articles.
