I Am Dedicating My Life To Nursing Because I Care About People

I often get asked, "Why nursing?" And to that, I sometimes want to reply, "Why not?" but I don't. I simply explain that I want to do something with my life that will help change the world while benefiting the lives around me. That's deep, isn't it? But it's true and there is so much more to that answer than I can put into words.

When I was 16, I was just like everyone else that had no idea what they wanted to do with their lives, except this was the age when I decided that I wanted to make an evident difference in the world. The only problem was that I had no idea how exactly to do that at the time. So, I began volunteering in the community. I quickly realized how much I enjoyed lifting the spirits of those around me and seeing that I was making a notable impact in others' lives. Soon after getting into the college of my choice, I made the arbitrary decision to major in nursing with the hope of being a registered nurse four years later.

Nursing school teaches you a million important life-saving concepts, but one is especially significance; the concept of being a nurse is heavy. Maya Angelou once said, “As a nurse, we have the opportunity to heal the mind, soul, heart, and body of our patients, their families, and ourselves. They may forget your name but they will never forget how you made them feel.” She is exactly right; it isn't just about the medicine and science. Instead, it is about comfort and care. Not only are nurses resilient, but they must also be full of empathy and compassion for everyone around them.

They are forced to experience life and death, love and loss, and joy and pain at any given time of the day. Their shifts are long and tiring and some patient cases can become extremely strenuous, yet you will never hear a nurse complain. They help to bring life into the world, and they also help it to leave the world in peace. Nurses comfort the sick and cheer on the strong. They are the ones that you will see at your bedside when you might not even know you need them.

I want that. I want all of that. I want to be there for everyone who needs me, to celebrate the successes and comfort the despair, and to make a difference in this harsh world. I can't think of any greater joy than knowing that I have the ability to help save a person's life.

“Let me dedicate my life today to the care of those who come my way. Let me touch each one with a healing hand and the gentle art for which I stand. And then tonight when the day is done, let me rest in peace if I’ve helped just one.” - Unknown

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

Thanksgiving break is over and Christmas is just around the corner and that means, for most college students, one hellish thing — finals week. It's the one time of year in which the library becomes over populated and mental breakdowns are most frequent. There is no way to avoid it or a cure for the pain that it brings. All we can do is hunker down with our books, order some Dominos, and pray that it will all be over soon. Luckily, we are not alone in this suffering. To prove it, here are just a few of the many deranged thoughts that go through a college student's mind during finals week.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.
