You're making the move from your childhood home into either a dorm room or your first apartment. You have old Jonas Brothers posters and your baby blanket draped across the foot of your bed as decoration. Maybe Face it, if you were to move into your new home right now, you'd have nothing to make it feel like your space. It's yours to do what you want it (well, as much as you can when it comes to the lease or dorm rules, of course).
1. Plants
Green up your space! Not only do they add color to your home, but they also provide oxygen while using up the carbon dioxide you're giving off while you talk to it. Yes, you should talk to your plants. It will help curb any loneliness you're experiencing.
If you're prone to forgetting to water your plants, perhaps try succulents or spider plants. They don't require very much sunlight or water and make for the coolest fairy gardens!
I even name my plants. Oscarella is a Spider Plant that was abandoned at my workplace. She'll be getting a new pot before we make our journey this Fall.
2. Throw Pillows
Throw pillows can really make a couch or recliner so much more comfy while showing off bits of your personality. Into sparkles? Get a sequin throw pillow to bring a bit of bling to your room. Are you a total hipster and need plaid in every aspect of your life? Get soft, flannel throw pillows. And, you can make your own throw pillows, making them truly one-of-a-kind! No one else will have that sugar skull Storm Trooper pillow. Who else would think to embroider a sassy feline with a funny saying on it to bring a smile to your face every time you sit down to relax.
Besides, they are great building blocks for blanket forts!!
3. Quilts
Just like throw pillows, you can make your own and customize them to your heart's delight! But, there's something even better about quilts: they have so many different uses.
Indeed, a big cozy quilt is perfect to snuggle up to your new throw pillows with.
Quilts can be made in smaller sizes, too. They can be made to hang on the wall (great for drafty rooms to hold in the heat!) or to set on a table top for decoration.
Use heat-resistant fleece instead of batting in the middle to make a quilted table runner and you have a piece of art that functions as a hot pad, too! Go ahead, set your casserole dish right on it without worrying about ruining your table or counter top.
4. Paintings
Have you ever checked out those painting classes that are at bars or you bring your own booze to the studio for a girls' night out? It's the perfect opportunity to make something fabulous for your living space while also having a great time with friends. Plus, it serves as a keepsake for the happy memory of the time spent making fun of each other's lack of drawing skills, even though the painting turned out absolutely fabulous! (Because drawing the Loch Ness Monster in place of a sailboat was the best tipsy decision I've ever made).
5. Lights
A simple string of white Christmas twinkle lights can act as cozy mood lighting or a festive nightlight. They can be strung up around a doorway, tangled up and put into a vase for decoration, or wrapped around the legs of a table to keep yourself from bumping into it. Plus, then you don't have to remember to pack them away after the Holiday season! Just move them from the tree to your preferred non-holiday spot!
6. Rugs
Are you stuck with icky flat carpet that feels more like textured cement? Place a super fuzzy rug to the side of your bed for your poor tootsies when you wake up first thing in the morning. Make sure you have something soft to stand on while you're slaving over a hot microwave in the kitchen. A fake sheepskin rug looks fabulous underneath a classy glass coffee table.
