As my fiancé and I plan for our future together, we have begun to evaluate which of the things we have owned since childhood will continue with us into the next stage of our lives, and which things we have outgrown. Like many 20-somethings, we're beginning to think about acquiring a more adult look in our home, but we are loathe to give up the (admittedly nerdy) passions of our youth. With that in mind, we have begun to look for home decor items that showcase our interests in a more refined way. For others who may be making similar decisions, here are 15 Of the Classiest Home Decor Items for Nerds.
15. Portal Book Ends
These are one of my fiancé's personal favorites. Although the term "classy" might be a bit of a stretch with these, sitting on a shelf with books in between them they would be subtle enough to work in an adult home while still reminding you of one of the best video games of all time.
14. Floppy Disc Coasters
These coasters were the first item I bought when I moved out on my own and for that reason they will always have a special place in my heart. That bias aside, we receive compliments on them all the time. Sitting on a coffee table they look like discarded floppy discs. They are silicone, which is perhaps not the best material for a coaster, but on a purely aesthetic level they are very cool.
13. Companion Cube Rug
Anyone who has played Portal has a special place in their hearts for the Companion Cube. With this rug, you can have the companion cube with you in your home--and as it's mostly grey, it will fit in just about anywhere.
12. Plumbomb Printed Cushion Cover
The Sims franchise has played an important part in my life. As a casual gamer, Sims was my first real introduction to the world of video games. The plumbomb is a subtle nod to the franchise. And what says "adult" more than having a nice throw pillow?
11. Longclaw Desk Lamp
It's hard to say enough about this lamp. It's cool factor is off the charts, and yet it is still a perfectly functional lamp in a nice, neutral color that would look great in any office or living room.
10. Millenium Falcon Cutting Board
Every kitchen needs a nice wooden cutting board. This one, carved to look like the Millenium Falcon, would make a beautiful display piece when not being used.
9. Chemist's Spice Rack
Although in truth this would have to go in a very specific kitchen, it has a nice blend of functionality and nerdy-ness. This is the sort of thing that feels like it should be on the set of the "Big Bang Theory."
8. Star Trek Towel Set
Although I am not a "Star Trek" fan myself, I appreciate how subtly these towels celebrate the universe. From afar they would look like any household towels, and the detailing on them is beautifully done.
7. Potion Desk Lamp
Possibly the coolest lamp I've ever seen, this has several modes: You can choose between a steady color or fluctuating colors. We bought one recently and have been using it as a night light, but it would look awesome in an office or library.
6. Deathly Hallows Clock
I think my favorite thing about this clock is that if a person didn't know anything about the "Harry Potter" universe, this would still look like a sleek, modern clock. It's a perfect way to sneak a bit of personal flair into the house without going overboard.
5. Star Wars Hand Towels
Celebrating my favorite and least favorite moment in the "Star Wars" movies, these are a beautiful twist on the traditional his/hers hand towels. They would look great in any bathroom, and if you're like me, every time you saw them you would want to hit Han Solo all over again.
4. Hobbit Letter Openers
I've never cared about owning a letter opener. That being said, if I were to get a letter opener, this would be the one. There are two different varieties available, both made to look like weapons from "The Lord of the Rings." And if you thought throw pillows were adult, opening mail with something other than your teeth is positively civilized.
3. Dr. Who Logo Clock
Much like the "Deathly Hallows" clock, this "Dr. Who" clock could be mistaken for a piece of modern art if a visitor didn't know the fandom. For someone who does know the fandom, though, it's more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, timey-wimey...stuff.
2. Map of Middle Earth
Maps on the wall have always been a particular interest of mine. They always have the appearance of being interesting and archaic. This silk map of Middle Earth has all the intrigue of a map while also showcasing one of the best book series's that of all time.
1. "Star Trek" Glasses
These sharp-looking glasses would be perfect for sipping a rum and coke at a nice dinner party. As I said before, I'm not a "Star Trek" fan, but even I would be proud to hold one of these in my hand.
