Some students come into college with a major already picked out and a well thought-out plan for what they want to do in life. They haven't deviated from it since they took their first step onto their college campus. Others come to college with a fairly certain idea of what they want to do, and merely tweak their path along their way to get to that goal. Then there are some students, like me, that come to college with only a vague idea of what they don’t want to do, and then try to go from there.
For those of us who didn't come to college with a specific major already locked in or have bounced around from major to major, here are a few things that you've probably experienced.1. It's not that you don't want to pick a major; it's just that you haven't found one that you want to pursue yet.
Why settle for something that you're not passionate about? However, it does help if you're good at it, too.
2. It seems like everyone around you already knows what they're going to major in.
In reality, there are a lot of people around you who don't. The average college student changes their major three times, so trust me, every single person around you does not have their major locked down already, even though it may feel that way sometimes.
3. In fact, talking about your major has become something that you dread.
It doesn't help that it seems to be everyone's new favorite subject.
4. Especially if you came into college undeclared, you might end up taking some really strange classes to fill those pesky core requirements.
"Theater for Social Justice," anyone?
5. Staying undeclared is all fun and games until they make you pick a major.
Sooner or later, that time will come, whether you're ready for it or not.
6. The longer you go without picking a major, the more your friends start to offer up suggestions as to what major you could try next.
Though the advice may be unsolicited, at least they mean well.
7. When you run out of core classes to take, you will be forced to pick something.
8. However, hopefully those strange classes will lead you to things that you actually enjoy, helping you to become one step closer in picking a major.
9. Or if not, you'll have a large slew of information that you'll never actually use in real life.
10. If you make a habit out of bouncing around from major to major, then your advisor will know you by name.
Visiting their office every time you decide to change your major does have its perks.
11. After you finally stumble upon a topic that you're interested, you realize that your hunt may almost be over.
12. Though finally landing on a major won't solve all of your problems, it will at least help give you a direction to go in.
That alone is a great reason to break out into dance.
13. If you haven't landed on a major that you love yet, don't fret. It's out there!
