The Decade Of Smart
Smart House

It is 2016 and smart is the norm, but for most of us, it’s just smartphones we are accustomed to. Yet, smart things are spreading into the home, stadiums and cities. So for now, let’s start at home!

Smart Fridge

The Smart fridge offers smart cooling, adjusting as needed. If you are at the grocery store and forget what is in the fridge, simply login to the camera and view what is inside the fridge. Your fridge will alert you when a food is running low or is nearing expiration. Best of all, you can order from home! Now, when you need that gallon of ice cream, just for yourself, you won’t feel nearly as shameful!

Smart Home

Nest Cam offers the smart home addition to life. From heating and air to a home camera. The air system learns the pattern of your life, registering when, how often and what temperature you set the monitor to each day. It also adjusts to the number of people in the home. So, if you are hosting a party, you don’t have to rush back and forth finding the perfect setting, Nest does it for you!

Nest Cam provides another aspect to the smart life. You can use it as a baby monitor, pet cam or as I like to call it, a life monitor. You can record every moment with a life feed straight to your phone or laptop. So, if you are out getting coffee, check in on your house and see the dog on the couch, you can finally do something about it! With commands, you can tell your dog to get down, sit or speak! Put it anywhere in the house to create memories for life. From proposals, to your baby’s first steps, capturing a robbery or capturing your first teenage kiss.

Smart Locks

Locking your front door is a brand new adventure with the August Smart Locks! The phone automatically sinks with your phone, allowing you easy access. Auto-lock and auto-unlock are an automatic with this lock! Other features allow you to set appointments with friends, family, plumbers and more. Plumber coming over at 3 p.m.? Set your lock to allow him in for the set time period. Then you can track when he arrives, when he leaves and know the door is locked! Have a brother in town for a week? Give him a week of access with the press of a button. Don’t want to get off your butt to answer the door, let your boyfriend have access for the set date time and viola! You no longer have to worry about them arriving early, because they won’t get in!

Smart Family

JIBO. Now isn’t that a name you could get used to? JIBO is the family member without any flaws, and won’t ever fight back. JIBO learns the name of every family member and joins family conversation. Have a brother away at college? No worries, he can join family dinner with video chat through JIBO! The user from afar can press any family members face and JIBO will follow it throughout the conversation, unless your little sister jumps in, then JIBO will jump to her. It’s like being there, following the conversation and faces. Think of JIBO as a souped up Siri, only actually nice. That’s why when you go to bed, he is certain to say goodnight!

is a must! See how JIBO can become a part of every aspect of your life.

While these things are awesome, remember that privacy, security and data collection for each of these products are untested in law and open for flexibility. Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
