The weekend of October 15th was a huge weekend for the Boise State Broncos football team. Not only was there a very large crowd on hand for the homecoming game against Colorado State, but there was also many festivities as Boise State celebrated their Fiesta Bowl win over Oklahoma. Ten years ago, Boise State stunned everyone by defeating the heavily favored Oklahoma Sooners 43-42 in Overtime, using the now famous statue of liberty play to take down the Sooners. The win was huge for the Broncos because it was their first ever Fiesta Bowl win but it meant more to the program. For the past years, Boise State had been one of the most overlooked teams, but now they finally caught the attention of the nation. Since one of the biggest wins in school history, Boise State has managed to win two more Fiesta Bowls, 17-10 against TCU in 2009 and 38-30 over Arizona in 2014 respectively.
Many members of them team were on hand to watch the Boise State offense struggle through the first half, going up 7-3 at the half. There was great celebration from the very large crowd at hand as the Fiesta Bowl team of 2007 was honored during halftime, and those fans that remained were in for a second half in which star Boise State tailback Jeremy McNichols would run for two touchdowns and the offense would score again on a 4th quarter trick play as Thomas Sperbeck completed a pass to A.J. Richardson to put the Broncos up 28-3. While it looked like Boise State had pulled away, Colorado State came surging back in the 4th quarter recovering two onside kicks and scoring two touchdowns with less than 5 minutes left, cutting down the Broncos lead to 28-23 as the Rams had already scored on a touchdown with 5 minutes remaining. The excitement was there for the end of this game just like the end of the Fiesta Bowl, as Colorado State fumbled the football on an attempted deep pass to send Boise State to a 6-0 start and their highest ranking since 2011.
The 2016 Boise State Football team has many similarities with the 2006 team, boasting a strong offense (though it is struggled at times), and a formidable defense that has proven to be one of the best in college football. This particular Boise State team looks to do what many Bronco teams have done in the past and make their way into a big bowl game. The big bowl game that they have their eyes set on would be the Cotton Bowl, which is apart of the New Years Six lineup. There, Boise State would have a chance to compete against a top power five program, something that the Broncos have done well at recently. In order to get to that Cotton Bowl game, Brett Rypien and Boise State would have to go undefeated, a 29% chance of doing so. That 29% chance has risen though because Boise has beaten the challenges on their schedule to include Washington State, Oregon State, and most recently BYU. The Broncos committed five turnovers this past weekend in a home game against BYU, yet somehow someway, Boise State came out with a 28-27 win. Teams are 9-283 when committing five or more turnovers, make Boise State number ten. While there was many mistakes in the most recent game, this win is a lot bigger than people want to admit. The win helps keep Boise State's hopes for that New Years Six game alive and with the toughest competition out of the way, the Broncos could be heading for their first undefeated season since 2009 and go down in history as one of the best teams in Boise State history alongside the 2006 team. The road to perfection continues for this strong and energized Boise State that is now 7-0 next weekend at Wyoming, and Bronco fans have the most hope they have had since the ending of the Kellen Moore era in 2011.
