We '90s kids are probably the most nostalgic generation for a number of reasons, but I think the biggest one is because we have experienced the most tremendous technological advances in history. We all have our smartphones and Windows 10 and Spotify playlists now, but we are also the same generation that experienced flip phones, Windows XP and cassette tapes. We have gotten to experience the evolution of popular music, and we have seen the improvement of quality in sound and picture. We were there when YouTube's highest quality setting was 360p.
The 2000s introduced the pitch corrector that was auto-tune. Teen pop was popular in the early 2000s, and the rock genre broke out into smaller subgenres such as alternative. We watched the birth of fashion trends like "scene" and "emo." We also experienced their deaths. As a Millenial who has lived through these significant changes, I will be putting out a series of articles that reminisces on earlier, simpler times.
One decade ago, some of the 15 most popular hit songs of the day were:
1. "Bad Day" by Daniel Powter
Because middle school was one long bad day.
2. "Temperature" by Sean Paul
My friend's old ringtone on her pink Razr flip phone.
3. "Promiscuous" by Nelly Furtado ft. Timbaland
The middle school cheerleaders' routine was danced to this song.
4. "You're Beautiful" by James Blunt
When you needed a reminder that you, a pimply 12-year-old, was actually beautiful.
5. "Hips Don't Lie" by Shakira ft. Wyclef Jean
An old favorite of mine.
6. "Unwritten" by Natasha Bedingfield
Because Natasha Bedingfield sang how you felt.
7. "Crazy" by Gnarls Barkley
There is no other song more technically perfect.
8. "Ridin'" by Chamillionaire ft. Krayzie Bone
Although I mostly remember Weird Al's "White & Nerdy" version of it.
9. "Sexyback" by Justin Timberlake
Because preteen boys thought they were hot.
10. "Check On It" by Beyonce ft. Slim Thug
Because Beyonce is the queen.
11. "Be Without You" by Mary J. Blige
Whatever happened to Mary J. Blige, anyway?
12. "Grillz" by Nelly ft. Paul Wall, Ali and Gipp
When Nelly frequented pop radio.
13. "Over My Head (Cable Car)" by The Fray
The song that was good but definitely overplayed on the FM stations.
14. "Run It" by Chris Brown
Before we all hated Chris Brown.
15. "It's Goin' Down" by Yung Joc
Remember dancing to this song? Because I do, and it's embarrassing.
