The Electoral College: Dooms Day Or Nah?

Will we get an able president for 2017 or will we be sitting on the edge of our seats for the next 4 years?

As people become increasingly informed on the current political situation in the US, many probably know that there is still a possibility that Hillary Clinton will be our next president. This will result from another vote from the Electoral College, which officially votes this Monday, December 19. Here are some reasons why I think that we need HRC to be the HBIC.

Although she has been at the center of numerous criminal issues and has been accused of using her and her husband’s political powers to limit the consequences of those actions, I think that we need to step back and look at Trump's track record in that realm. Trump does not seem to pay any federal taxes, publicly brags about it, and refuses to publish any official records. At least the Clintons publish everything they pay.

He claims that Hillary is ridiculously crooked because of all that has happened during the campaigns, but if you look at all of the scandals he was involved in, he also continuously lied in nearly every interview or debate, even about things that HE said! He has said multiple times that he has a plan for everything, on how to make America great again, but there is no meat to those plans. He just says he’s going to do it without any information to actually back his claims up. But when he does say something and it comes back to bite him in a different interview or debate, he denies his own words. He never used proper statistics and in many cases his facts were completely wrong. Also, why would you want a president who is so open about acts of sexual harassment in his past and is so obsessed with luxury in the worst sense of the word?

He has his head in the clouds-- it’s not even close to attached to his body! He thinks that he can condense the US tax brackets from 7 to 3 in the first 100 days he is in office. I don’t know about you, but after taking ECON 101, Micro and Macro, it simply is not feasible as a state to do such a thing, especially with all of the government spending he plans to do.

He has no respect for human beings. He is blatantly racist (and the kicker is his wife is an immigrant, not to mention that his family immigrated to the US as well). He is a walking contradiction but he still believes he is the most qualified to “Make America Great Again.” (Side note: I still find it extremely hard to understand what that truly means.) This man is a disaster to himself.

Even President Obama, an optimist, does not think that Trump will be ready with the little mentorship a president-elect usually receives. It is frightening to think that Trump did not know that he was in charge of hiring nearly the entire White House staff. The fact that he did not know what his new job would really entail is a true sign of how unfit he is. If you will, you could compare it to a ninth grader running for high school president when they only just made it out of eighth grade.

If Trump does end up staying president, I really do wish him the best, for all of our sakes. I give him the benefit of the doubt as he is one of the most unorthodox president-elects we could have and he does have some high dreams for this nation. How he’s going to get there... we'll just have to buckle up and find out.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
