Dear Zach

A letter to you.

Dear Zach,

Over the past year and a half you’ve done nothing but continuously amaze me. There are so many things about you that are great qualities as they are, but when they all add up to make you, that’s when they are at their prime.

In short, you are simply perfect.

You inspire me with your strength, and your determination to help when something is wrong will carry you far in life. My best example of this is your relentlessness when asking me “what’s wrong?” when I am too embarrassed or unwilling to tell you. It may be a silly example but to me it’s significant, because it shows that you care and want to know what’s going wrong so that it can be fixed and that everything can be back to where it was.

You’ve seen me far beyond my worst and far beyond my best and the person you are (and were) during both of those extremes displays your character so well. I know how lucky I am to have you, and that is something I couldn’t forget if I tried.

I know you think you are shy, introverted, and not outgoing in the slightest, but I’m here to convince you that you’re wrong. You underestimate your greatness and how powerful your constant positivity and laid-back attitude is. You never fail to make people laugh and smile and genuinely enjoy being around you. Don’t let your thoughts hold you back from doing great things. Your willingness to try new things, even though you may be anxious, is infectious, and you make me more outgoing (if that’s even possible).

You are well liked by everyone and kind at heart. Your authenticity is a treasure you hold and the people who are close to you are so lucky to have such a perfect friend like you in their life. I am eternally grateful that I get to be a big part of that, too.

You’ve changed my view on life to be more positive and carefree. You showed me how to let go a little and adventure. Hell, you even introduced me to frisbees, and now I’m never turning back.

Thank you for making me the best version of myself. I learned by example from the best — you. You are the light in my life and I am always hoping for the best for you.

I plan to spend the rest of my life with you and my heart tells me that I will, but I know that regardless of what happens I will always look back on our time that we shared our lives together fondly and as some of my best. Our relationship is never hindered by dull moments, only exciting memories that we create together, and I’ve become this new person with you, who I really believe is better. I think I continue to get better every day and I know that I have to thank you for a lot of that inspiration.

Lastly, thank you for being my backbone when I needed it. Despite your feelings, you’ve always been my #1 support system, and I don’t know how I could ever repay you for that. If I could be half as supportive as you are to those in my life, it would be amazing. Thanks for being that beautiful ray of sunshine in my life and for always being my best friend.

I love you.

Lauren

Dear Mom,

You took care of me and my brothers our entire lives and you still continue to! I will not be able to truly grasp all of the hard work that you put into this family until I create my own one day. But, I know that there are plenty of times I forgot to give you a simple thank you or an appreciative smile. I thank you for everything that you have done for me and will continue to do for me. Here are some examples of those times where you had my back and I forgot to pat your back for saving me:

College is hard. As people ages 18-22, we’re just trying to figure out what we’re doing with our lives, our careers, our eating habits, exercise routines, sleep patterns, and other necessities for adult life. We definitely don’t take proper care of ourselves; it’s basically impossible when we have essays, tests and readings due and somehow we’re supposed to eat right, exercise and sleep. We’re doomed to get sick. I have zero experience in science but when I get sick there are certain things I do to make myself better.

Now that it seems “talking” is the new way to date, and will stay that way until another idiotic term is used to describe the people who can’t settle down and just date someone, I feel as if it’s time to go over the unwritten rules of “talking.”

Rule 1. Having feeling without feeling.
