"Dear White People" Is Everything We Need

Netflix recently dropped the show, "Dear White People," and it's taking the world by storm. Stemming from the success of the film version, the show is just as controversial and just as important as the original movie. At this point, it's no secret what the show is all about and right off the bat it lets you know that everything, and I do mean everything, will be handled head on and not shy away from the f*cked up truth.

Lately I've been hearing a lot of people, white people specifically, complain about how divisive the show is and how it feeds into a double standard. So, I decided to do my own version of a letter addressed to, you guessed it, all of you angry white people:

Dear angry white people,

Let me begin by asking why you're mad? I mean, have you even watched the show? Did you even take the time to see what it is you're getting all up in arms about? Or did you decide that you hated it simply because the title made you uncomfortable? You can get back to me with that one...

I get it. You're not racist. You have black friends, right? You just don't understand why a show needs to pit black and white people against each other because it's actually doing more damage than good in your eyes.

The discussion and anger that these black people have is, after all, misplaced. It's not like you enslaved them. And besides that, white people were enslaved at points to. And there was indentured servitude! So, your ancestors have paid their dues too, right? Can't we just let it go?

I mean, what if you guys made a show called, "Dear Black People," then what would happen? You'd be called racist! And you aren't because as you said before, you have black friends.

In a few words, I have summed up everything I want to say to all of you angry white people that are feeling marginalized by this show: shut the f*ck up.

Now, if you're still reading, I have some other things to discuss, but if I've made you too angry feel free to stop. It's not like you took the time to watch the show, so why keep reading this, right?

To be clear, I'm not here to shame all white people or listen to you tell me how I'm being "reverse racist" which still isn't a thing so please let that one go already. People of color cannot be racist towards white people because in order to be racist you must have both privilege and power. Racism is a system of disadvantages based on race, black people don't stand to benefit from such systems, and therefore cannot be racist (s/o to Dear White People the movie for this one). If you are white, you have not experienced racial oppression - The closest thing to it was when a white guy committed genocide against certain white people for other white people, which is obviously a f*cking terrible thing. But that was still oppression within the same race. So no, black people cannot be racist towards white people. But anyways... I'm here to let you know why this show is so important to me and why I believe it should be important to everyone. That's it.

When you watch this show, you'll be afforded a glimpse into the every day struggles of black Americans. Of dealing with being "too black" or "not black enough." Trying to find a way that they can "tone down the black" in them so that they can be accepted in a white dominated society and not be looked at as threatening simply because of the color of their skin.

Blatantly, the show at it's core forces you to accept that racism in America is still alive and well. The characters often say things like, "I can't believe this could happen at a place like Winchester," which is often quickly followed with another person of color saying, "I can."

You don't get to tell me that this show is divisive when I'm living in a society that still has institutionalized racism, still has racial profiling, still has officers of the law brutally murdering people of color, and still has people telling me I overreact and somehow speaking out about these issues makes me the problem. No. You don't get to tell me any of that.

Oh, and please don't start with the "Blue Lives Matter" or all of your rhetoric about "not all police officers are killing people." I know this. Many people in my family are in law enforcement, I know good cops, we all do. But that doesn't mean these things aren't happening. Whether or not someone treats an officer with respect shouldn't be the thing that causes their death. Period.

As for "Blue Lives Matter," that completely skews the point of the initial "Black Lives Matter" movement. WE KNOW ALL LIVES MATTER. WE GET THAT ALL LIVES MATTER. WHY ARE YOU ONLY MAD WHEN WE DECIDE TO SPECIFY THAT BLACK LIVES MATTER TOO???

You're trying to tell me that "blue" lives matter and "all" lives matter, so where were you when Trayvon Martin was murdered? Where were during the Charleston church shooting? What about Tanisha Anderson or Michelle Cusseaux? Where were you when Jordan Edwards was murdered (which this just happened by the way, I wonder if you knew his name before right now)? I mean, if all lives matter, shouldn't you be at least equally outraged by their deaths as you are with black people forming a group to protect and liberate themselves?

All you're doing right now by hating this show without even giving it a chance is undermining the experiences of black people with your racial privilege (paraphrased from @szashad).

A good friend of mine, Alexis Cabrera, in reaction to the show said, "Yes, it's called 'Dear White People,' but it's not supposed to be antagonizing... I see it as an invitation to get to know us a little more." And he is absolutely right.

This show gives people a taste of what being black in America is like. If it makes you uncomfortable, get used to it, because we aren't going to stop talking about our experiences for the sake of your comfort.

These issues are real. These truths are real. And now with a show so mainstream that is discussing it in such a straight forward matter, I can only hope that we as a public use this as an opportunity to educate ourselves and be more compassionate and empathetic towards each other.

As Kimberlé Crenshaw said, "If we can't see a problem, we can't fix a problem." I hope you see it because the truth is, if you weren't racist, you wouldn't have a problem with this show.

So... Dear white people, if you're still reading, and still mad please do us all a favor and check your privilege. Check your racism. And try to see it the bubble of a world you live in from a different point of view.

Sincerely,

A Mad Black Woman

The transition into adulthood is never easy

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
