Dear University Of Minnesota

"Let’s be honest, Goldy is the best mascot ever!"

As I walk around campus leaving from my last class of my undergraduate education, I can't help but feel extremely sentimental and grateful for my time here at the University of Minnesota (UMN). This school is where I have found who I am, what career I should pursue, and who some of my best friends are. Reflecting on that, I just wanted to say thank you to the school that has made my college experience the best that I could ever hope for.

I transferred here from a smaller school the second semester of my sophomore year. I was extremely nervous to come here for multiple reasons. The first was that at my other school with significantly less people, my student adviser never really took the time to know me. Every time I went into his office, he would ask me to remind him what I wanted to do as a career and continue to ask me questions that we went over every time I met with him. I did not feel confident in what he was telling me.

I thought coming to a bigger school would make this situation worse. How could my academic adviser, who has a ton of more students, know me on even a somewhat personal level. However, I was paired with the best adviser I could have ever asked for! After just one meeting with her, she knew me and remembered aspects of our conversation. I saw her once on the street after our first meeting, and she recognized me and asked me about things I thought she would have forgotten that we talked about. She gave me a ton of confidence and was such a help throughout my time here. Faustina, thank you!

Another thing I was worried about was having people think I was weird for walking alone on campus. At small schools, if you are ever alone, people stare at you weird. The greatest thing about a big school is that people are alone all the time on campus. It is completely normal and completely accepted for someone to be eating or studying alone.

The thing that I have loved the most is the overall sense of community throughout the campus. To me, this was especially evident at sporting events. It was great to be in a huge group of people who were all cheering for the same team and same school (and let’s be honest, Goldy is the best mascot ever!). On the first warm day of the semester, everyone is out on the lawn playing frisbee or soccer or laying out on the grass. It creates such a welcoming environment.

I could go on and on about everything that I love about UMN. I am honored to be graduating from such a great school and to call myself a Gopher. Thankfully, I will be attending graduate school here and get the opportunity to hang around just a little longer.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
