Dear 2017...

A letter to the New Year

Dear 2017...
New York Daily News

Dear 2017,

You came up quite fast. It seemed like yesterday I was counting down a toast to the New Year. Holidays, birthdays and events flew by without a second thought. The school year seemed to just disappear before my eyes, and now I am here. Only a week or so until the New Year, reflecting and foreshadowing what the New Year will look like, what it will be like.

2017, I hope to meet people who will change my life, for the better. To those people, I hope we make the best memories, one that I will cherish forever.

I can't wait for the memories to be made, my graduation, my senior prom, my 18th birthday soon to come, the start of college. All monumental events ready to be celebrated in the best ways possible. 2017, make these days be some of the best I have ever had.

2017, I hope there are some surprises, some things I would have never expected.

2017, I hope the world is okay, I hope we can live in peace. I hope there is harmony. There may be some factors that are worrisome, some controversies, some fears. I hope these dissipate, I want there to be peace, and I so deeply want there to be more smiles, less tears, and much less fear.

2017, I look forward to the art that will be produced. The film, music and art that will be created and discovered.

2017, I am curious as to what trends will come in the next year. What new fashion trends will make their way back from the past, what new social media blunder may happen, what major news stories will flood our feeds?

2017, I know bad things may happen, I know there will be sadness maybe heartbreak to many, but let this be a lead into something positive.

2017, you're coming and I know it is going to be a hell of a year.

So many things happen year to year we reflect on and say "Oh I remember that!" or "That was unbelievable/crazy..." Etc., etc.

To everyone else who may be wishing and wondering what is to come, as this year goes on remember...

You have the power to do all the things you want to accomplish this year.

Make your resolutions and work them, and give yourself a pat on the back when you do.

Another year, another chance to be who you want to be. Another year of opportunities, and more of a chance to live.

Live and live freely, pick up a new hobby, learn about a new subject, get the job of your dreams, visit the family you haven't seen in forever, meet new people, rekindle old friendships. Just go and do.

Sincerely,

somebody who is ready to celebrate the New Year

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
