Dear Taylor

THIS IS MORE THAN JUST A NEGATIVE HEADLINE

Dear Taylor,

It’s been a while since we last spoke, actually almost 2 years now. It’s crazy how time flies by, but I know that you’ve seen things I’ve posted, and I know you know I exist which is pretty cool, to be quite honest.

Let’s get down to business, though. Why I am writing you, you may ask? Well, I have read the recent articles, and I have seen Calvin’s tweet, and I know you need your Swifties, your friends, to be there for you.

Trust me, I have read the headlines and articles, but one thing remains constant within me, even after – you are my favorite human being on this planet. You are countless people’s best friends, including mine, and you have been there for us, through your Tumblr posts and music, so we are going to be there for you.

I am a proud member of the TBI – the Taylor Bureau of Investigation. I have been since roughly 2011. You handpicked me and countless others to come over and listen to ‘1989’ pre-release. We were there for you when everything seemed to be negative – all the headlines, all the posts, and all the jokes. We are going to be there for you now, too, when it is starting to get dark once again.

I know I am just a 21-year-old girl who is just a future educator obsessed with you, but I want to tell you a few things you need to remember, and here they are:

1. You are more than what they all say.

2. You are not a serial dater.

3. Walking through rainstorms gets you clean.

4. You are a strong, independent woman who doesn’t need no man.

5. You write more than just break-up songs, and there really is nothing wrong with expressing your emotions through your songwriting.

6. You are a beautiful human being – inside and out.

7. It’s really okay to be not okay.

8. Surround yourself with your squad – it’s okay to just have your friends and no boyfriend.

9. You have won awards that are named after YOU.

10. You have a net worth more than most people have when you count their entire family’s worth. So that has to count for something, right?

11. 2012 called and wants its jokes back – so don’t listen to the album jokes.
12. You are more than just an artist – you are a real person.

13. Taylor Swift was an excellent beginning; Fearless was your rise to stardom; Speak Now WAS LITERALLY WRITTEN BY YOU AND YOU ONLY; Red should’ve won 13 Grammys; 1989 was a great way to come back and say to the world, “Life’s a game, and I am winning.” The next album will be killer, too, whenever it is written.

Your Swifties love you, and I need you to remember that every single day of your life. I love you, and I will never stop supporting you. Like you said, you have been the longest and best relationship I have ever had, and you have made me who I am today.

My weird heart loves your weird heart,

Sydney

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
