An Open Letter To Spellman Hall

No matter where our schedules took us throughout the day, you always brought us back to the same place at night.

Dear Spellman,

When I first saw you I was bursting with excitement and curiosity. At first, I was overwhelmed with your interwound hallways and scattered staircases. However, you welcomed me with open arms, and provided me with a great freshman experience. You seemed so complex to me at first; you were a stranger. But, as I got to know you, you became my home. You've given me some of my best friends, and housed some of the greatest memories that i'll carry with me for the rest of my life.

You house around 400 residents, stand three stories tall, and reside relatively close to the rest of the campus. You're made out of stone and brick, and are painted multiple colors on the inside. With the first floor coated in a welcoming white, the second a lighter blue, and the third, a mint green. Although, you don't have air conditioning, you've provided us with rooms big enough to live comfortably, and a sink in the corner for our convenience. You have plenty of storage, and made it easier to transition from living at home to living in your rooms. Not to mention your beautiful views. Every day when I walk outside, you have given us a great morning sky, and colorful sunset, with the New York City skyline in the background.

Although, you do have some things that you can improve upon. I know you want to keep us safe, but setting your fire alarms off every time someone is taking a hot shower, or blow-drying their hair is a little too much. Also, some of your sinks leak a little and never turn off. The second floor bathroom always has a sink running, and not to mention the sink falling off and flooding the second floor in the beginning of the year. For the people lucky enough to call you their home in the coming years, I hope you learn not to wake them up at two in the morning, or have them stand outside on the quad in their towels and soapy hair. But it's okay, everyone has their bad days, and we still love you.

Spellman, we've had our ups and downs but you've been there through it all. You were there to witness new friendships being made, while watching us let go of our tight and familiar grips onto our families. You've seen me frantically write a five-page paper, and study like mad for an upcoming test I was sure I would fail. You've also seen me full with joy when I actually passed the test. You've witnessed the late night conversations, and early morning triumphs to get up out of bed. You've seen me laugh, and probably have seen me cry.

I want to thank you for giving me my second floor family, and that I'll miss you. I'm going to miss walking in and out of everyone's rooms. I'm going to miss walking down the hall with the doors swung open and music blasting. I'll also miss that same obnoxious music filling your halls at 3 am. But most importantly, I'm going to miss how you brought and kept everyone together throughout the year. No matter where our schedules took us throughout the day, we always came back to the same place at night.

Next year, we'll all be living with your neighbors, Founders, Dammann, or Tenney, and the family that you've given us won't be together anymore. Even though we won't be in one building, we'll all be able to walk by you next year and remember all of the great people you allowed us to meet, and all of the memories that you've allowed us to make. I hope your freshman next year realize how lucky they are to have you, and how many memories you hold within your walls.

Love,

D

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
