Dear self,

you deserve a pat on the back. Not only have you successfully completed grade school, gotten into college, and survived your first year of college; you will now be embarking on the journey of an upperclassman as a Sophomore. Do not make a big deal out of it because it is only your second year of college, but at the same time do not panic. Freshman year was the true test if you could handle college; and well, you passed. You managed to do fine during your first year, and though classes will be more difficult, have faith in yourself that you will succeed because anything is possible.

Something to remember, however, is that one of the most important keys to your success, this year and in years to follow, is to keep on track with your studies. No matter how much you want to enjoy your time in college, it is just as important to study and do your assignments. Do not let yourself fall behind and make sure you ask questions when you need to. That being said, do let yourself have fun and hangout with friends and do clubs or activities on campus. College is not just for getting a degree, it is a way to help you move into the world with success in both study and interpersonal skills.

Sophomore year is going to be new and exciting, but not because you are going to a new school. You will be furthering your education toward your goals of becoming a teacher. You will begin your first field study, you are taking more sophisticated and advanced courses, and you are becoming a more active and involved student in your community. Nobody has said that this would be easy, but given that you have come this far, you are guaranteed to get through any obstacles that come your way.

Sophomore year is coming up and before you know it, there will be an article related to your junior and senior years of college. You are making yourself noticed by putting yourself out there in a way that will benefit you for the greater good. Life will be full of surprises and throw you some curve balls this year, it is important to just keep your head up high and keep going.

When May comes around and you have finally finished your sophomore year, you will be half way done with your undergraduate career. Not to get too ahead of yourself, but you are growing into an even more mature, responsible, and independent young adult. So as long as you stick to your studies, have fun with friends, and find time for yourself; you will succeed without a doubt.

Here is to the beginning of your sophomore year in college; you can do it!

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.

Cambio

Singing is something I do all day, every day. It doesn't matter where I am or who's around. If I feel like singing, I'm going to. It's probably annoying sometimes, but I don't care -- I love to sing! If I'm not singing, I'm probably humming, sometimes without even realizing it. So as someone who loves to sing, these are some of the feelings and thoughts I have probably almost every day.
