To My Sister On Prom Night

To My Sister On Prom Night

Since I went to college, we haven't talked very much. Classes and jobs keep our days busy, homework and friends occupy our free time through the week. When I can make it home on the weekends, it's a hit and miss if we see each other. Sometimes I don't know I'm coming home until the morning of. So, you have plans made, and the day is too hectic to sit down and talk.

But you ask me to go prom dress shopping. You work it around my schedule.

When I went prom dress shopping, I went with friends, picked it out, and showed mom a picture of the one I wanted. But you, you want our presence. In the end, it'll be your decision but you chose to make us a part of it. My prom was small, a group of homeschoolers in fancy clothes. Yours will be a high school event. With more people and better music. Your date will match his tie with your dress, all I did was pick the right jewelry for mine.

I don't get to tell you often, I wish I could; you're beautiful.

You, my sister, you are a gorgeous young lady with a radiant smile. Your style matches your personality: a mix of independence with a hint of creativity. Your prom dress will be nothing short of perfect for you. Whatever color, whatever cut or design, it will reflect who you are better than any words I could write. You are already regal, with the heart of a princess and the integrity of a queen. No matter the shine or sparkle on your gown, your presence will glow brighter. Your beauty isn't just skin-deep.

We may fight and yell, kick or scream with fierce words, but it's just a loud representation of how much we care. We laugh together, we've cried and all the other cliches combined. When prom ends, and the evening fades, my appreciation, respect, love, and awe for you will remain.

You are powerful. You are intelligent. You are talented. You have worth. Your spirit is a force like no other.

No matter how radiant you look on prom night, to me, your whole being is beautiful and unique; every day.

Enjoy the evening. Laugh, love, live, and dance. Make the night one to look back on. And when we look back one day at the pictures taken, we will smile. In my mind, I'll remember how important it was to you that I was there to help pick it out. To me, it's astonishing how important my presence is to you. I'm honored that you love me and that my opinion is valued. You, my dear, will be the one to have my respect and love, regardless of whatever happens in our lives. You'll shine on prom night, that's a given. But to me, you'll always shine.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Sister | Brother Style - Word Press

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?
