Dear Sister Leaving For College, It's About You Now

To the girl who wipes everyone's tears and still manages to keep a smile on her face,

You did it! I'm beyond proud of you for getting into the school that makes you excited for the future. It may not be A&M, but I'm glad you're choosing to make yourself happy for a change. I know that you're destined for great things in the future. I know that you're dreading this last semester of high school, but just absorb everything you can. The friends you're making, the lessons you're learning, and the emotions you're feeling will be beneficial for your future. You've already made it three and a half years, whats an extra semester?

Life hasn't always been peachy for you, especially because you had to deal with lots of it while Charlie and I are away at college. But somehow, you still managed. I admire your strength and courage to continue living your everyday life with the world believing everything was okay, while you were breaking on the inside. You have always been one to be there for others, putting others happiness before your own, and that's great but it's time to put yourself before others. You grew up way too fast, you became an adult when you should have instead been worrying about how to divide and multiply fractions. I'm sorry you had to deal with that on your own. I wish that I could have been by your side through these hardships and heartbreaks.

I look at you now and see a beautiful, wise, humble, kind woman. I still remember when you were younger and had your Spongebob teeth, you grew into them thankfully. It still seems so surreal to me that you're off to college in less than a year. You'll get to experience everything I told you about and more. You create your own rules, plans, and path. You'll do well on your own, I'm not worried because I know you'll be a leader. You're going to be the change that many need. You bring light to the darkest spaces, warmth to the coldest hearts, and a mark in everyone's life.

Even though A&M won't get you, I know you'll do great things at Tech. Time flies, so enjoy every moment. Learn from the good and the bad, let them serve as lessons. Study hard, but also remember to enjoy yourself. Go out and make new friends, new memories. Before you know it, your four years will be up and you'll be off to bigger and better things.

I am beyond proud of you. My advice to you is this: Be selfish, do things you want to do, remember your worth, and always be true to what you believe.

Love,

Your biggest fan

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
