With the election of a new president, Donald Trump, there has been a lot more talk about women’s rights, but specifically women's rights when it comes to abortions and funding for Planned Parenthood. Women all over this country, including myself, are outraged with Donald Trump’s plans to defund Planned Parenthood and to make abortions illegal once again. I question whether or not it is in the best intentions, or just to live up to his phony campaign.
I ask the following questions on behalf on my uterus, and other uteruses everywhere:
Dear President Trump, what do you know about a woman’s body?
I still try to make sense of why someone wouldn’t be okay with abortions. If a girl/ woman is not ready mentally, financially, or any other way, how is it fair to put a child into that world? I ask and plead for you to realize this is a right a woman should have. It's her decision, not yours. You have no clue what it's like to be scared for your future.
Dear President Trump, what if it were a man?
No offense, but you’re a man with a penis, I think, with no way to get pregnant and have your life ruined. A man can easily leave the woman whom he impregnates, so why can a woman not get out of it? Why is it a woman’s duty to take care of a child? Why is it her fault if she gets pregnant? Why should a woman’s future be affected or even ruined because of a simple mistake? President Trump, I don’t think you understand.
Dear President Trump, what if she is poor?
Defunding Planned Parenthood is a TERRIBLE idea. Only about three percent of Planned Parenthood services are abortions. The other ninety-seven percent includes STD/STI testing, cancer screening and prevention sessions, and prenatal care. Who will I go to if I cannot afford a cancer screening at a regular doctor's office? 40,000 plus women die from just breast cancer alone each year, so how will I know? Are you taking into consideration the other services Planned Parenthood provides, or are you simply just focused on that three percent of abortions?
Dear President Trump, where do we draw the line?
I know that just about every Christian is Pro-Life, but when did the church become a part of the state again? There is suppose to be a line that is not crossed when it comes to religion and laws, so why is it okay to blur the line? What if I am not a Christian? We have a Constitution that states everyone is entitled to their own religious views and opinions, so why is yours deciding what I do with my body?
Dear President Trump, what about our country’s debt?
You talk so much about how you want to get our country out of debt, do you know abortions help with that? Say an unfit/ financially unstable woman gets pregnant and cannot abort her child. She either has to put that child in foster care or try to raise it on her own. Each option takes money out of the government’s pocket causing, even more, debt in our country. So why not give a mother who knows she is unable to take care of the child the chance to have an abortion? Have you ever thought about that?
Dear President Trump, where are our rights?
We as women are preached to about how we have equal rights and how we should not complain, but that’s far from the truth. If we have to fight to have a choice in whether or not we have a child and how we go about it, how do we have equal rights? Men do not have to fight for their rights to use condoms, so why should women have to fight for affordable birth control and the right to be able to have an abortion?
President Trump, even Bill Nye the Science Guy agrees...
So President Trump, do you now understand?
I’m guessing your answer is no. You will not change your opinion on the topic again because you are afraid what the rest of the conservatives will say now that you are in office. The real explanation to the question is that you have never cared, and neither have a lot of men in office. But what about the women of this world who will have to deal with your decision? Think about how it will affect many of their decisions that have anything to do with their bodies. Mr. Trump, I do not think it's fair for you to do this, and since you will not change your mind, I will continue to use my voice and support all women’s marches. Because I am a woman, and I have rights to my body, and I do not need some 60-70-year-olds telling me what I can or can’t do with my body. This is not about who won the election, this is about my rights as a woman.
Sincerely,
My Uterus And Every Other Woman’s Uterus In This Great Country.
