Dear Mr. President,
I know that you'll never see this, but I'm writing this to you. I'm writing this because I am concerned that enough people found you to be a suitable president for the United States. I'm writing this because discrimination is your game when inclusion and unity is what we should be striving for. I'm writing this as a white heterosexual female who is concerned for my minority friends. I'm writing this because you, Mr. President, are making a mistake.
I've always thought of our country as a melting pot. We are White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and everything in between. I'm not naive and I never thought that we lived completely harmoniously, but I thought we were a beautiful country nonetheless. Then, you opened my eyes.
No — that is not a compliment, Mr. President. I am not inspired by you. I am not proud of you. In fact, I'm embarrassed by you. Rather than embracing our biggest strength — our diversity — you, Mr. President, are destroying it.
Discrimination, racism, and sexism are your favorite things to promote and under the guise of Mr. President, apparently, you can get away with unlawful discrimination.
On Wednesday, you hastily announced that transgenders who serve in the military are a burden, and banned them from serving. Mr. President, these people are serving the country that you represent. These people are supporting a country in a way that most Americans wouldn't. These people are serving a country that won't even serve them. So really, how dare you?
We are all American, though right now I might not be proud to say it. Better yet, we are all people. We are all human, so hear us.
Oh, and Mr. President, we are not a burden.
