Dear Parents, From Your College Student

Dear Mom and Dad,

Hi, it's me, your college student, away at school learning the very best I can.

I just wanted to drop this here and let you know I still love you very much. You may not receive enough (or maybe you receive too many) calls from me, but that's because I'm learning to deal with being a "grown up," which isn't always fun and it sometimes leaves me going through the day fighting tears or constantly thinking about my to-do list. It's not because I don't love you, it's not because I forget about you, so please, don't think that way. I love every chance I get to call or talk to you and I'm sorry if it's not enough (or too much).

How can I forget your cooking? The food here is...odd for the lack of a better term. How could I forget the laundry you did for me? Now it costs and that's no fun. How can I forget your small reminders to help me remember the little things? Now I seem to forget or get close to forgetting what I need to and should remember to do. How can I forget your hugs? Because sometimes no other hug can do but yours. Your role as a parent isn't easily forgotten, quite the opposite actually.

Now that I'm here at college, it's nice to come home to you. I appreciate just being home and destressing from school. I love just being in your presence. I know other people want my attention when I go home, but you're who I always want to see first. I also love the things you do for me when I do come home. The laundry, the snacks, the shopping, the extra spending money, and did I mention the food? I appreciate it so so so much. Being home is relaxing and being able to do nothing is glorious, please don't think I'm bored or upset. I don't mind going out or doing fun things with you, but if there are no plans, I'm more than happy to watch Netflix all day in my pajamas. As I stated before, it's really nice just to be with you.

Now that I'm away, I still know you care. I don't feel forgotten or left out. I know you have fun things you get to do, and I'm having fun here too. That's what happens when I'm busy getting all educated. It's a part of life! It's not always fair. But that's ok because I have you. You taught me those important lessons about life and all of the fun it brings.

You will always be my parents. I will always love you. I'm here today because of YOU. You had me, you helped me, you supported me, you raised me, and you taught me.

Thank you, Mom and Dad. Thank you for everything. I love you.

Love,

Your College Student

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

9 Reasons Why Friends Are Essential In College

College without friends is like peanut butter without jelly.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
